What University of Aberdeen Mumbai is

University of Aberdeen Mumbai is the first India campus of the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495 and the fifth-oldest university in the United Kingdom. This also makes it the first Scottish university to operate a campus in India. The university is ranked 262nd globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and 30th in the UK (Complete University Guide 2026).

The Mumbai campus is located at the Cignus Powai development in Mumbai’s Powai district, scheduled to open in August 2026 with teaching commencing in September 2026. Admissions opened in December 2025. A formal agreement to proceed with the campus was signed in January 2026, with the University of Aberdeen becoming the fourth foreign university to receive Indian regulatory approval for an independent campus.

The campus operates as a joint venture with Eruditus Executive Education, a global provider supporting several UK universities entering India. The partnership assists with campus operations, student recruitment, and programme delivery.

Who it’s for

Students who want a degree from a 500-year-old Scottish university with a distinctive four-year honours degree structure — reflecting the Scottish tradition of a broader undergraduate education that creates space for micro-internships, hackathons, and employer-led workshops within the degree. Aberdeen has explicitly designed the Mumbai programmes around the four-year model rather than the three-year English degree, citing enhanced employability as the rationale.

The campus is particularly suited for students interested in Finance, Economics, Computing Science, or Data Science in a Mumbai context — the programme selection directly reflects Mumbai’s identity as India’s financial capital and a growing AI and technology hub. The MBA is available for experienced professionals seeking a career pivot or advancement.

The campus also offers a distinctive three-country mobility model: students can spend a semester at Aberdeen’s UK campus in Scotland, and there is discussion of integrating the Doha campus (established 2017 in partnership with AFG College in Qatar) into a mobility pathway. This is more international mobility than any other UK branch campus in India has committed to at launch.

Programs offered

Undergraduate (4-year Honours, UG)

The four-year structure reflects the Scottish Honours degree tradition, incorporating space for industry engagement beyond standard classroom teaching:

  • MA (Hons) Business Management — Annual fee: ₹12 lakh. Entry: 75% overall in Class 12, 80% English
  • MA (Hons) Economics — Annual fee: ₹12 lakh. Entry: 75% overall in Class 12, 80% English, 75% Maths
  • BSc (Hons) Computing Science — Annual fee: ₹12 lakh. Entry: 75% overall + 75% in two Maths/Science subjects
  • BSc (Hons) Data Science — Annual fee: ₹12 lakh. Entry: 75% overall + 75% in two Maths/Science subjects

Total cost over four years at ₹12 lakh/year: approximately ₹48 lakh. Confirm current fees at abdn.ac.uk/mumbai.

Postgraduate (1-year, PG)

  • MSc Artificial Intelligence — Annual fee: ₹14 lakh. Requires undergraduate degree in CS or related field, minimum 55–65% depending on institution type
  • MBA — Annual fee: ₹17 lakh. Requires undergraduate degree (minimum 40% marks) plus 2 years of work experience

An Aberdeen Pioneer Scholarship offered a ₹2 lakh tuition waiver for applicants who applied by 31 January 2026.

Phase 2 programmes (to be introduced after initial launch): International Business Management, Film and Creative Industries, Psychology (subject to accreditation with Indian bodies).

Campus and infrastructure

The campus is situated at the Cignus Powai development in Powai, the same district as the University of Bristol and University of York Mumbai campuses. Infrastructure includes computing labs and cloud-based technology environments, with AI-specific infrastructure as a key focus. A research and innovation office is planned for a second phase to support collaborations in AI, energy, and life sciences.

Aberdeen has also engaged with the Maharashtra government on the International Edu City — a planned education hub near the new Navi Mumbai International Airport — indicating potential future involvement in that development.

Three-country mobility model

Aberdeen has committed to cross-campus student mobility across three locations:

  1. Mumbai, India — Primary campus for India-enrolled students
  2. Aberdeen, Scotland, UK — Semester exchange opportunity for Mumbai students
  3. Doha, Qatar — Aberdeen’s existing Doha campus (established 2017) may be integrated into the mobility pathway

This is a distinctive feature versus other UK branch campuses in India at the 2026 launch, where student mobility is either limited or not formally committed.

Things to verify before applying

  • Fees: Annual fees of ₹12 lakh (UG) and ₹14–17 lakh (PG) are sourced from The PIE News and third-party reports. The official Aberdeen Mumbai website should be the definitive source.
  • MBA work experience: Verify the minimum work experience requirement (2 years) and whether exceptions apply for strong academic profiles.
  • MSc AI eligibility: Entry requirements vary based on institution type — Tier 1 universities (55%), state universities (60%), private universities (65%). Confirm which category your institution falls under.
  • Four-year degree: The four-year honours structure is longer than comparable three-year UK branch campus degrees. Confirm whether employers and postgraduate institutions treat Aberdeen MA (Hons) equivalently to three-year degrees.
  • Phase 2 programmes: Film, Creative Industries, and Psychology are planned but not confirmed for immediate launch. Do not apply expecting these unless confirmed by the admissions office.
  • Pioneer Scholarship: The ₹2 lakh scholarship for applicants before 31 January 2026 has likely closed; verify current scholarship availability.
