What AIIMS Delhi is

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS New Delhi or AIIMS Delhi), established in 1956 by an Act of Parliament, is an autonomous institution of national importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (AIIMS About Us). It is India’s most prestigious medical institution and has held NIRF Rank 1 in the Medical category without interruption (NIRF Medical Rankings 2024).

The institution spans a 213-acre campus in Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, and functions simultaneously as a medical school, research institute, and a major tertiary-care hospital serving millions of patients annually. AIIMS Delhi ranks 127th in medicine globally in the QS World University Rankings 2024.

Its core mandate, as defined in the AIIMS Act, 1956, is to develop high standards of medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, bring educational facilities of the highest order in health science training, and attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education in India (AIIMS MBBS Academic Page).

Who it’s for

The AIIMS Delhi MBBS programme is for students who score at the very top of NEET UG. In 2025, the General category closing rank at AIIMS Delhi was AIR 47, meaning only roughly 47 students in the entire country could secure a General category seat (per MCC NEET UG counselling data, mcc.nic.in). This is not a college that requires strategic planning around “should I apply here”, it requires sustained NEET preparation at the national topper level.

Students who secure AIIMS Delhi do so knowing:

  • Fees are virtually zero (total MBBS tuition for 5.5 years is approximately ₹6,075)
  • The clinical exposure, faculty, and peer cohort are among the best available anywhere in India
  • The degree carries exceptional weight in postgraduate medical admissions, research, and public health careers

Programs offered

Undergraduate:

  • MBBS, 5.5-year programme (4.5 years academic + 1 year rotating internship). 132 seats total (per MCC NEET UG Counselling seat matrix). Admission via NEET UG through MCC counselling.

Campus and infrastructure

AIIMS Delhi’s 213-acre campus in Ansari Nagar, South Delhi, is an integrated medical campus. The main hospital is one of the largest public hospitals in India, with over 2,400 beds and handling tens of thousands of outpatient visits daily. MBBS students gain clinical training exposure that is difficult to replicate at any private medical college.

The campus has residential hostels for MBBS students, a large medical library, departmental laboratories, and a comprehensive simulation and skills lab. The sheer volume and variety of clinical cases seen at AIIMS Delhi, due to its status as a national referral centre, is a defining feature of the MBBS education.

Things to verify before applying

  • NEET UG score requirement: The General category closing rank in 2025 was AIR 47 (per MCC NEET UG counselling data; mcc.nic.in). A score above 685 (out of 720) is needed for a reasonable chance. Targets should be set accordingly.
  • MCC counselling process: All AIIMS MBBS seats are filled through Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the All India Quota. There is no state quota at AIIMS Delhi.
  • Hostel availability: Hostel accommodation is subject to availability. The ₹990 hostel rent per year (INR 123 per semester) is symbolic, verify current charges with AIIMS directly.
  • Postgraduate admission: MD/MS admission is through INI CET, a separate exam conducted jointly by AIIMS Delhi and other Institutes of National Importance.
  • Foreign national seats: 7 seats within the General category are reserved for foreign nationals under different fee norms.
