Overview

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) is a state public university established by the Government of NCT of Delhi in 2008 through the Ambedkar University Delhi Act.[1] AUD is a unitary, non-affiliating university, unlike Delhi University, it does not have affiliated colleges. All teaching and examination happens within AUD itself.

The university is accredited with NAAC A grade and has appeared in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.[6] AUD enrolls approximately 2,979 students (1,509 UG, 1,300 PG, 170 doctoral) with 168 academic staff across 13 schools and 8 centres.[2] AUD’s founding mission emphasises research-led teaching in the liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences, areas that are often underfunded at other state universities. It operates multiple campuses across Delhi, including Kashmere Gate (16 acres) and Lodhi Road.[2]

AUD is notable for offering several interdisciplinary programs uncommon in the public university system, such as BA in Law and Politics, Global Studies, and Sustainable Urbanism, alongside conventional honours programs in History, Economics, and Political Science.[1]

Academic Programs

Undergraduate programs at AUD include:[1]

  • BA (Hons) in History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, English, Hindi, Mathematics, and Social Sciences & Humanities
  • BA in Law and Politics, Global Studies, Sustainable Urbanism, and Social Sciences
  • BBA
  • BVoc programs in select vocational streams

All UG admissions are through CUET UG scores.[3] Programs follow a choice-based credit system under NEP guidelines.

Postgraduate programs include MA in various humanities and social science disciplines, MBA, and research degrees (MPhil/PhD).[1]

Campus and Location

AUD’s main campus at Kashmere Gate spans 16 acres in central Delhi, housed in a heritage precinct near the Inter-State Bus Terminal and Kashmere Gate Metro Station. The campus includes a historic 300-year-old library building. The Karampura campus serves vocational and additional programs, while the Lodhi Road campus (2 acres) hosts select schools. A major 110-acre campus at Dheerpur in North Delhi is under construction.[3]

Being in the heart of Delhi gives students access to national archives, policy institutions, cultural venues, and a vibrant academic ecosystem. The campus infrastructure is functional rather than sprawling, AUD does not have a large residential campus in the manner of private liberal arts universities. Hostel facilities are limited (with priority for outstation and reserved category students) and many students find accommodation in nearby areas.

Who Applies Here

AUD attracts students who want a rigorous liberal arts education at public university fees. The annual tuition of approximately INR 57,000–1,01,000 (per AUD brochure) makes it one of the most affordable options in this guide, comparable to Delhi University colleges but with the distinctive interdisciplinary programs that DU does not offer.[4]

Students often compare AUD with DU’s top colleges (LSR, Miranda House, St. Stephen’s). Community discussions suggest that AUD appeals to those interested in niche fields like Sustainable Urbanism and Law & Politics that have no DU equivalent. However, AUD lacks the brand recognition that DU colleges carry, and some students note that placement infrastructure is still developing.[5]

AUD is a strong fit for Delhi-based students who want an intellectually rigorous environment without the high fees of private liberal arts universities.

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • CUET score requirements: AUD admission is entirely through CUET UG. Check the specific CUET subject combinations required for your desired program on the AUD admission portal.
  • Hostel availability: AUD has limited hostel capacity. If you are from outside Delhi, confirm hostel allotment before accepting admission.
  • Campus of enrollment: Different programs may be offered at different campuses (Kashmere Gate, Lodhi Road). Verify which campus your program operates from.
  • Program-specific fees: Fee structures vary by program. BA (Hons) and BA programs have different fee slabs, confirm the exact amount for your program on the official website.
  • Placement support: AUD’s placement cell is relatively new. If career services matter to you, speak to current students or alumni about the current state of placements.
