Overview
Anant National University (AnantU), established in 2016 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a private university self-described as “India’s First DesignX University,” focused on design, sustainability, and the built environment.[1] The university was founded with the vision of integrating design education with social and environmental responsibility.
Why it’s in this guide: AnantU is not a liberal arts college. It’s included because its design programs incorporate significant humanities content, sustainability, climate action, and design thinking, which may appeal to students interested in design-humanities intersections. Students considering interdisciplinary programs that combine creative practice with social science perspectives may cross-shop AnantU with liberal arts alternatives.
AnantU does not yet hold NAAC accreditation. The university’s small batch sizes (total enrollment under 1000) create an intimate academic environment.
Academic Programs
Programs (per official brochure):
- BDes, 4 years with 8+ specialisations (Product Design, Communication Design, Built Environment, and more)
- BArch, 5 years
- BTech Climate Change, 4 years
- BFA Visual Arts, 4 years
Programs integrate studio-based design practice with coursework in humanities, social sciences, and environmental studies. The curriculum includes fieldwork, community engagement, and interdisciplinary projects.
Campus and Location
AnantU’s 40-acre campus is located on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway, about 20 km from Ahmedabad city centre. The campus was designed with sustainability principles and includes studios, workshops, a fab lab, and green spaces.
Ahmedabad’s growing design and architecture ecosystem (NID, CEPT, and IIM are all in the city) creates a supportive environment for design education.
Who Applies Here
AnantU attracts students passionate about design, sustainability, and social impact. The small batch sizes mean a personalised education. Students compare AnantU with NID (public, more competitive, cheaper), Srishti (Bangalore), and CEPT (architecture-focused, also Ahmedabad).[3]
At ~INR 5.5-6.25 lakh/year, AnantU is in the premium tier. The trade-off: it’s a young university without NAAC accreditation and with limited placement track record.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- No NAAC accreditation: AnantU does not currently have NAAC accreditation. Check the latest status.
- Design-only institution: AnantU is a design-focused university. If you want a broad liberal arts education, consider alternatives.
- Small batch size: Total enrollment is small. This means personalised attention but also limited peer diversity.
- Placement track record: As a 2016-established university, placement data is limited. Ask for batch-specific outcomes.
- Portfolio requirement: BDes admission requires a design aptitude test or portfolio. Prepare accordingly.
