What Anna University is

Anna University, established in 1978 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, is a state public technical university headquartered in Chennai. The university is accredited NAAC A++ and ranked 12th among universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings (NIRF 2025).

Anna University has two distinct roles. First, it operates four prestigious constituent colleges on its campuses:

Admission to the constituent colleges is through TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions), which uses Class XII marks as the basis for counselling — there is no entrance exam. This means admission depends heavily on board exam performance. Students with high Class XII scores from Tamil Nadu boards, CBSE, or ICSE are the primary applicants.

Fee structure (2025-26)

As a state public university, Anna University’s fees are among the lowest for engineering education in India (Anna University Admissions):

Annual tuition for B.E. programs is approximately ₹50,000. Total 4-year B.E. cost including hostel is estimated at ₹3–4 lakh — a fraction of private university fees.

Note: Fee structure for government quota seats is regulated by the Tamil Nadu government. Management quota and NRI seats have different (higher) fee structures.
