What Anna University is

Anna University, established in 1978 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, is a state public technical university headquartered in Chennai. The university is accredited NAAC A++ and ranked 12th among universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings (NIRF 2025).

Anna University has two distinct roles. First, it operates four prestigious constituent colleges on its campuses:

  • College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) — established in 1794, one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia
  • Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) — established in 1944
  • Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) — established in 1949 (notable as where APJ Abdul Kalam studied)
  • School of Architecture and Planning (SAP)

Second, Anna University is the affiliating university for over 500 engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu. This profile covers only the constituent colleges on the Anna University campus, not the affiliated colleges.

The Guindy campus spans approximately 100 acres in central Chennai. The constituent colleges enroll approximately 8,000 students with around 700 faculty members (Anna University Official Website).

Who it’s for

Anna University’s constituent colleges draw students who want a high-quality, low-cost engineering education in Chennai. CEG and MIT are among the most sought-after engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, and their tuition fees — as a state public institution — are a fraction of what private universities charge.

Admission to the constituent colleges is through TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions), which uses Class XII marks as the basis for counselling — there is no entrance exam. This means admission depends heavily on board exam performance. Students with high Class XII scores from Tamil Nadu boards, CBSE, or ICSE are the primary applicants.

The typical Anna University student values affordability, a Chennai location, and the historical reputation of CEG and MIT. Alumni include prominent figures in Indian industry and academia. The proximity to IT corridors in Chennai (Sholinganallur, Taramani) gives students access to internship and placement opportunities with companies headquartered in the city.

Students from outside Tamil Nadu should note that a significant majority of seats are reserved for Tamil Nadu domicile candidates. The out-of-state seat allocation is limited.

Programs offered

Admission to constituent colleges is through TNEA counselling (based on Class XII marks). Postgraduate admissions are through TANCA (Tamil Nadu Common Admissions).

CEG — B.E./B.Tech Programs:

  • Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geo-Informatics

MIT — B.Tech Programs:

  • Aerospace Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, Rubber and Plastics Technology, Chemical Engineering

ACT — B.Tech Programs:

  • Chemical Engineering, Textile Technology, Leather Technology, Ceramic Technology, Pharmaceutical Technology

SAP:

  • B.Arch (5 years)

Postgraduate (across all constituent colleges):

  • M.E./M.Tech in various specialisations
  • MBA (Department of Management Studies)
  • M.Sc./M.Phil. in Applied Sciences
  • Ph.D. programs across departments

Fee structure (2025-26)

As a state public university, Anna University’s fees are among the lowest for engineering education in India (Anna University Admissions):

Fee ComponentAmount (INR)Frequency
Tuition fee (B.E./B.Tech)~₹25,000Per semester
Other fees (exam, library, etc.)~₹10,000–15,000Per semester
Hostel fee~₹5,000–8,000Per semester

Annual tuition for B.E. programs is approximately ₹50,000. Total 4-year B.E. cost including hostel is estimated at ₹3–4 lakh — a fraction of private university fees.

Note: Fee structure for government quota seats is regulated by the Tamil Nadu government. Management quota and NRI seats have different (higher) fee structures.

Campus and infrastructure

The Anna University Guindy campus (100 acres) is located in Guindy, central Chennai:

  • Heritage buildings at CEG dating back to the 18th century
  • Departmental laboratories and research centres across all constituent colleges
  • Central Library (one of the largest technical libraries in southern India)
  • Centre for Technology Development and Transfer
  • Sports facilities including grounds, gymnasium, and swimming pool
  • Hostels for men and women
  • The campus is adjacent to the IIT Madras campus and the Guindy National Park

MIT campus is located in Chromepet, about 20 km from the main Guindy campus.

Things to verify before applying

  • TNEA 2026 counselling dates: Counselling typically begins in June after Class XII results. Confirm at annauniv.edu/admissions.
  • Domicile requirements: A significant majority of seats are reserved for Tamil Nadu domicile candidates. Verify the out-of-state seat quota.
  • CEG vs. MIT vs. ACT: These constituent colleges have different program offerings and slightly different campus environments. Research which college offers your preferred program.
  • Affiliated college confusion: Anna University affiliates 500+ colleges across Tamil Nadu. Ensure you are applying to the constituent colleges (CEG, MIT, ACT, SAP) — not an affiliated college — if that is your intention.
  • Hostel availability: Hostel seats are limited relative to demand, especially for out-of-state students. Confirm availability during counselling.

Where to go next on this site

  • JEE Main — not used for Anna University constituent colleges, but many applicants take both
  • GATE — for M.E./M.Tech admissions at Anna University
  • IIT Madras — adjacent campus, top IIT comparison
  • NIT Trichy — top NIT in Tamil Nadu
  • BITS Pilani — private engineering comparison
