What BITS Pilani is

Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, established in 1964, is a deemed university recognised as an Institution of Eminence by the Ministry of Education. The institute operates campuses in Pilani (Rajasthan), K K Birla Goa Campus, Hyderabad Campus, and Dubai, with BITSOM (Mumbai) as its management school. BITS Pilani is accredited NAAC A++ and ranked 7th among universities and 11th in engineering in the NIRF 2025 rankings (NIRF 2025).

BITS Pilani admits students exclusively through BITSAT, its own computer-based entrance exam, and does not accept JEE Main or JEE Advanced scores. This single-exam admission route is a distinctive feature — students receive a single score that determines eligibility across all three Indian campuses and all programs.

The Pilani campus spans 328 acres in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. The institute enrolls approximately 15,700 students across all campuses, with 1,071 faculty members (BITS Pilani NIRF Data).

BITS Pilani draws students who want an engineering or science education with significant industry exposure built into the curriculum. The Practice School (PS) program — a mandatory 5.5-month industry internship in the third year (PS-I) and an optional 5.5-month stint in the fourth year (PS-II) — is the institute’s most distinctive feature and a primary reason students choose BITS over other options.

Students who value flexibility also benefit from the dual-degree option: M.Sc. students can apply for a dual degree in engineering after completing their first year, based on academic performance. BITS also offers 2+2 international collaborative programs with universities in Australia, the US, and France.

The typical BITS applicant is strong in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, aiming for a career in technology, consulting, finance, or product management. BITS alumni are well-represented in Silicon Valley, Indian startups, and management consulting firms. Fee structure (2025-26)

The following fees apply to all First Degree programmes (B.E., M.Sc., B.Pharm.) at all three Indian campuses for AY 2025-26 (admissions.bits-pilani.ac.in/FD/FD_fee.html):

Annual tuition (two semesters) = ₹5,50,000 for AY 2025-26. Fees escalate annually — the scheduled tuition for students entering in 2025-26 will be ₹2,88,500/semester in AY 2026-27, ₹3,02,500 in AY 2027-28, and ₹3,17,500 in AY 2028-29. The summer term fee (if registered) is 35% of the semester tuition fee for that year.

Campus and infrastructure

The Pilani campus (328 acres) is located in Vidya Vihar, Pilani, Rajasthan. The campus is fully residential with hostels for all students. Facilities include:

• Central Library with extensive digital and physical resources
• Technology Innovation Hub (Bio-CPS vertical, funded by DST with ₹125 Cr grant)
• Labs and research centres across departments
• Sports facilities including swimming pool, gymnasium, and playing fields
• Auditoriums and cultural spaces

The Goa campus is located in Zuarinagar, South Goa, and the Hyderabad campus is in Jawahar Nagar, Shamirpet. Each campus operates semi-independently with its own faculty, hostels, and facilities, though academic standards and the BITSAT admission process are unified.

BITS also operates a campus in Dubai (academic city) primarily serving international students.
