What CEPT University is

CEPT University, established in 1962 as the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad, is a private university dedicated entirely to the built environment — architecture, planning, construction technology, design, and management of human habitats. The university was granted university status by the Government of Gujarat in 2005 and renamed CEPT University in 2010 (CEPT University).

CEPT is ranked 6th in India for Architecture in the NIRF 2025 rankings (NIRF 2025). It holds NAAC A accreditation and has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of Gujarat. The university’s alumni include Pritzker Prize winner B.V. Doshi, Rahul Mehrotra (Chair of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard GSD), and Bimal Patel (Padma Shri awardee).

The university is organised into five faculties: Architecture (FA), Planning (FP), Technology (FT), Design (FD), and Management (FM). All programs are focused on built-environment disciplines — this is not a general-purpose university. The campus sits in the Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad, close to IIM Ahmedabad and the National Institute of Design.

Who it’s for

CEPT attracts students who are specifically interested in architecture, urban planning, construction technology, interior and furniture design, or habitat management. The typical applicant has a strong visual-spatial aptitude and wants a career that intersects design with the physical environment.

For B.Arch. applicants: you need a valid NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 score. CEPT’s architecture program is selective, with a competitive admission process.

For postgraduate applicants: the Faculty of Technology programs (Construction Engineering and Management, Geomatics, Structural Engineering Design, Building Energy Performance) accept graduates from civil engineering, architecture, and related disciplines. Admission is through CEPT’s own entrance process.

Students who want a conventional engineering education (CS, electrical, mechanical) should look elsewhere — CEPT does not offer these. The entire university is built around habitat-related disciplines, which gives it unusual depth in that niche but means zero breadth outside it.

Programs offered

Faculty of Architecture (FA):

  • B.Arch. (5 years) — admission via NATA / JEE Main Paper 2
  • M.Arch. with specialisations in Architectural Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Conservation and Regeneration, and more (2 years)

Faculty of Planning (FP):

  • Bachelor of Planning (4 years)
  • Master of Urban Planning, Master of Urban and Regional Planning (2 years)

Faculty of Technology (FT):

  • B.Tech. Civil Engineering Honours (5 years)
  • Master in Construction Engineering and Management (MCEM, 2 years)
  • Master in Geomatics (MGeo, 2 years)
  • Master in Structural Engineering Design (MSED, 2 years)
  • Master in Building Energy Performance (MBEP, 2 years)

Faculty of Design (FD):

  • Master of Design (2 years)

Faculty of Management (FM):

  • MBA in Built Environment (2 years)

Research:

  • Ph.D. programs across all five faculties
  • PhD programmes across multiple disciplines

All undergraduate admissions begin with the CEPT Foundation Programme — a common first year across faculties that introduces students to drawing, model-making, spatial thinking, and interdisciplinary design fundamentals before they move into their chosen faculty at Level 2 (CEPT Foundation Programme Handbook 2024-25).

Campus and infrastructure

The CEPT campus is located in Navrangpura, central Ahmedabad (pincode 380009), within walking distance of the IIM Ahmedabad campus and the National Institute of Design. The campus buildings themselves are notable works of architecture — the original building was designed by B.V. Doshi, and later additions include work by other prominent architects.

Facilities include:

  • Workshops and fabrication laboratories with studio-based pedagogy (teacher-student ratio 1:8 as per Faculty of Technology brochures)
  • NABL-accredited Surveying and Levelling laboratory
  • FT-BIM Advancement Lab in association with Bentley BIM Institute (50+ software programs)
  • Computer labs equipped with ArcGIS, ENVI, and ERDAS for geomatics programs
  • Library with physical and digital resources
  • Hostel facilities (limited — most students find accommodation in nearby areas)
  • The campus integrates indoor and outdoor learning spaces, with studios forming the primary teaching environment

International exchange partnerships include University of Melbourne (Australia), Polis University (Albania), HFT Stuttgart University (Germany), Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco (Portugal), and Politecnico di Milano (Italy) (CEPT CEM Brochure 2025).

Things to verify before applying

  • B.Arch. admission requirements: Confirm whether CEPT accepts NATA scores, JEE Main Paper 2 scores, or both for the current admission cycle. Requirements change year to year.
  • Foundation Programme structure: All undergraduate students at CEPT go through a mandatory Foundation Programme (1 year) before entering their chosen faculty. Verify the current Foundation Programme fee and structure at cept.ac.in/admissions.
  • Fee structure: CEPT is a private university and fees are substantially higher than government architecture colleges. Verify current year fees directly with the admissions office.
  • Hostel availability: Campus hostel capacity is limited. Many students arrange private accommodation in Ahmedabad. Check availability before assuming on-campus housing.
  • NIRF ranking: CEPT is ranked 6th for Architecture in NIRF 2025.
  • Placement patterns: CEPT graduates predominantly enter private architectural practices, planning consultancies, and construction firms rather than campus placement in the IT/corporate sense. Verify placement data with the individual faculty offices.
