Overview

Fergusson College, established in 1885, is one of the oldest and most respected colleges in Pune, Maharashtra.^[1] Operated by the Deccan Education Society, Fergusson is an autonomous college affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). The college holds NAAC A+ accreditation.

Fergusson’s 52-acre campus in central Pune is a heritage landmark, the Gothic-style buildings and tree-lined walkways create a distinctive academic atmosphere. The college has a strong tradition in arts, sciences, and has produced notable alumni in academia, politics, and the civil services.^[1]

As an autonomous college, Fergusson designs its own curriculum within the SPPU framework, conducts its own examinations, and awards degrees under SPPU. This autonomy allows some curricular flexibility that affiliated colleges lack.

Note: Fergusson awards SPPU degrees but sets its own syllabus and exam schedule as an autonomous institution.

Campus and Location

Fergusson College’s 52-acre campus is located on Fergusson College Road in central Pune, one of the city’s most recognisable addresses. The campus features heritage buildings, a botanical garden, amphitheatre, and modern additions including a digital library.

Pune is India’s leading education city, with a student population of over 1 million. The central location provides excellent access to cultural venues, cafes (FC Road is famous for its food scene), and professional opportunities. Fergusson does not have on-campus hostels, students arrange PG accommodation in nearby areas like Shivajinagar or Deccan.

Fergusson attracts students from Maharashtra and across India who want a quality undergraduate education at public-college fees with the added prestige of one of Pune’s oldest institutions. BA Economics and Psychology at Fergusson are particularly competitive.

At ~INR 2,000-15,000 per year (aided sections are cheaper than unaided), Fergusson is extremely affordable. Students compare it with other Pune colleges like Symbiosis (private, much more expensive) and with DU colleges for national-level comparisons.^[3]

The trade-off: Fergusson offers affordability and heritage but follows a traditional departmental structure, not a flexible liberal arts curriculum.

• Aided vs unaided sections: Fergusson has both aided (cheaper, competitive) and unaided sections for some programs. Fees differ significantly. Confirm which section you’re admitted to.
• Admission process: Admission is merit-based on Class XII marks. Apply through the Fergusson admission portal. No entrance exam.
• No hostel facility: Fergusson does not have student hostels. Plan for PG accommodation in Pune.
• SPPU degree: The degree is awarded by Savitribai Phule Pune University, though curriculum is set by Fergusson (autonomous). Confirm the degree nomenclature for your program.
