What IISc is
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), established in 1909 in Bangalore, is India’s oldest and most prestigious research institution. It was founded through a collaboration between Jamsetji Tata, the Mysore royal family, and the Government of India. IISc holds the top position in the NIRF Research Rankings for 2024 and ranks 2nd in the Overall category, one place behind IIT Madras. It received a NAAC A++ grade.
Globally, IISc consistently appears in the top 200 institutions in QS World University Rankings and is recognised as one of Asia’s leading research universities. It receives among the highest research funding per faculty member of any Indian institution.
Unlike IITs, IISc is primarily a postgraduate and research institution. Its undergraduate BS (Research) programme, launched in 2011, is a 4-year research-oriented degree, not a conventional BTech.
Who it’s for
IISc is the right choice for students who are fundamentally interested in research, science, and advanced technology, and who want the best research environment in India. Its BS (Research) programme attracts JEE Advanced toppers who prefer depth in a science or interdisciplinary research track over the standard engineering degree format.
For postgraduates, IISc’s MTech programmes are highly competitive (GATE scores in the 600–900 range required for most departments). The advantage is significant: IISc MTech graduates command some of the highest average packages in the GATE system, with CS and Electronics branches reporting average packages of INR 27–36 LPA.
Students who want to pursue a PhD in India typically prefer IISc over IITs for research opportunities. The Integrated PhD programme allows strong BSc graduates to pursue PhD-level work without a separate MSc.
Programs offered

- BS (Research), 4-year interdisciplinary science degree via JEE Advanced or IISER Aptitude Test (IAT); seat allotment through JoSAA (JEE Advanced route) or directly on the IISc portal (IAT route)
- Disciplines: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, Materials
- BTech in Mathematics and Computing, 4-year programme (new; confirmed in Admission Notice 2025-26)
Postgraduate:
- MTech (2-year, 22+ specialisations) via GATE
- MTech (Research) (2-year, thesis-based) via GATE
- MSc (2-year) in Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences via IIT JAM (as per Admission Notice 2025-26; Physics MSc not listed in current cycle, verify availability)
- MDes via CEED
- MMgt (1-year management programme)
- ME (1-year, Semiconductor Technology)
Doctoral:
- Integrated PhD (BSc entry to PhD, 5-6 years)
- PhD across all departments (via GATE/NET/UGC-CSIR)
Campus and infrastructure
IISc occupies a 400-acre campus in Malleshwaram, Bangalore, established as a “city within a city” with its own post office, fire station, hospital, and schools. The campus contains 40+ departments, research divisions, and specialised centres. Research facilities include supercomputing centres, nanofabrication labs, and high-performance materials labs.
The campus is walkable and fully residential for students. Bangalore’s tech ecosystem, proximity to Wipro, Infosys, ISRO, and DRDO campuses, makes IISc a natural interface between academia and industry.
Things to verify before applying
- BS vs BTech: IISc’s BS (Research) is not equivalent to a BTech in employability terms for direct industry entry. The programme is designed for students who intend to pursue research (PhD) or are comfortable with a research-oriented BSc profile. Verify whether your career goal aligns with this.
- MTech GATE cutoffs: GATE scores required for IISc MTech are among the highest in India. For CS and Electronics specialisations, General category candidates typically require GATE scores of 625–900. Verify current cutoffs on the official IISc admissions portal.
- BS fee hike (2026 onwards): IISc raised BS programme tuition from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 80,000 per year from 2026-27 for new admissions. Existing students are unaffected. Verify current applicable fees for your admission year at bs-ug.iisc.ac.in.
- Fellowship/stipend: BS students receive Rs. 5,000/month stipend. MTech students receive Rs. 12,400/month. PhD/Integrated PhD students receive Rs. 31,000–42,000/month.
