What IIT Bombay is

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is a public Institute of National Importance established in 1958 on a 550-acre campus in Powai, Mumbai. It is consistently ranked among the top three institutions in India across overall and engineering categories by NIRF, holding 3rd position in both Overall and Engineering in 2024. Globally, it ranked 149th in the QS World University Rankings 2024, first among all Indian institutions.

IIT Bombay awarded 3,303 degrees in 2023-24 across UG, PG, and PhD programmes, including 499 PhD degrees. The Institute received Rs. 428 crores in R&D funding in FY 2023-24, an increase of 15% over the previous year. A total of 335 R&D projects were initiated with a sanctioned outlay of Rs. 389 crores.

Who it’s for

IIT Bombay is the most competitive destination for JEE Advanced qualifiers: 47 of the top 50 and 72 of the top 100 JEE 2024 rankers enrolled here. Students come primarily for BTech in CS, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, though the institute also runs strong programmes in Aerospace, Metallurgy, and Mathematics.

The campus suits students who want access to research infrastructure alongside engineering education, IIT Bombay runs 543 companies in its placement process, and a significant portion of non-participating students opt for higher studies abroad (MS, PhD) or civil services. Students interested in design have a dedicated Industrial Design Centre (IDC). An entrepreneurship ecosystem (SINE, Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) supports startups on campus.

Things to verify before applying

  • Tuition fee waivers: SC/ST and PwD students receive 100% tuition waiver. Students from families with annual income below Rs. 1 lakh also receive full tuition waivers. Students in the Rs. 1–5 lakh bracket receive 2/3rd waiver. Confirm current thresholds directly with the institute.
  • Seat allocation: BTech seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling. Candidates must monitor opening and closing ranks by branch on the JoSAA portal each year, as they shift annually.
  • GATE cutoffs for MTech: GATE scores required for MTech admission vary by department. Check the department-specific cutoffs on the official admissions portal.
  • Placement vs. higher studies: A significant fraction of IIT Bombay graduates opt for MS/PhD abroad or civil services rather than campus placements. Placement statistics reflect only those who participated, out of 2,414 registered students in 2023-24, 1,979 actively participated and 1,475 accepted offers.
