What IIT Delhi is

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is a public Institute of National Importance established in 1961 at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. It ranks 4th Overall and 2nd in Engineering in the NIRF 2024 rankings, and consistently appears among the top 200–250 institutions globally in QS rankings.

IIT Delhi sits on a 325-acre campus in south Delhi, adjacent to Jawaharlal Nehru University. It runs 16 academic departments, 9 interdisciplinary centres, and 6 schools, including one of India’s most established management schools (Department of Management Studies, DMS).

The institute is particularly known for strength in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and its humanities and social sciences programme. Its location in the national capital gives it proximity to government policy institutions, research labs, and the Delhi startup ecosystem.

Who it’s for

IIT Delhi is the natural preference for JEE Advanced toppers who want to stay in Delhi or who are targeting CS, EE, or management careers. Its DMS (MBA programme) consistently ranks in the top 10 business schools in India.

Students interested in research will find well-funded labs and proximity to national research institutions (CSIR labs, DRDO, NIC) in New Delhi. The campus supports a strong student activity culture including Techniche (technical festival), Rendezvous (cultural festival), and entrepreneurship cells.
