What IIT Kharagpur is
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP), established in 1951, is India’s first IIT and remains the largest in terms of campus area at approximately 2,100 acres. It is ranked #5 in Engineering and #6 Overall by NIRF 2024, and consistently ranks #5 in Research. The campus is a self-contained township in Kharagpur, West Bengal, about 120 kilometres from Kolkata.
IIT Kharagpur has the broadest programme portfolio of any IIT, spanning engineering, sciences, humanities, law, and management. It is also home to the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), which offers a two-year MBA programme and is one of the earliest management schools established within an IIT.
Who it’s for
For BTech: Candidates admitted through JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main. IIT Kharagpur offers 30+ BTech and dual-degree programmes across departments including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, and more. The BTech tuition fee is Rs 1,00,000 per semester for General/EWS/OBC-NCL students (income above Rs 5 lakh), with fee waivers available for lower income brackets and full waiver for SC/ST/PwD students.
For MTech: Candidates admitted through GATE. IIT KGP offers a wide range of MTech specialisations. The programme fee is substantially subsidised; GATE-qualified students typically receive a monthly stipend under the MHRD scheme.
For MBA (VGSoM): Candidates admitted through CAT. The VGSoM MBA is a two-year programme with 100% placement history. The programme fee for 2024-26 batch is approximately Rs 11.75 lakh.
For BSc/Integrated MSc: Candidates admitted through IIT JAM for postgraduate science programmes.
The campus is a residential institution and all students are expected to live on campus in one of IIT KGP’s 22 residential halls of residence.
Programs offered
BTech AI and Data Science and other BTech programmes, 4 years: Admission through JEE Advanced via JoSAA counselling. Computer Science consistently records the highest demand with closing ranks among the lowest at IIT KGP. Branch-wise average packages in the 2024 placement cycle ranged from Rs 15 LPA (Civil) to Rs 26 LPA (Computer Science).
BTech + MTech Dual Degree, 5 years: A five-year integrated programme offering both a BTech and MTech degree in a combined format. Available in select departments.
Master of Technology (MTech), 2 years: Admission through GATE. GATE-qualified students in MHRD-funded seats receive a stipend of approximately Rs 12,400/month. IIT KGP offers one of India’s widest MTech specialisation portfolios.
Master of Business Administration (MBA), 2 years — Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM): Admission through CAT. A two-year residential MBA programme. The 2023-25 batch of 142 students recorded 100% placement with an average package of Rs 22.75 LPA, median of Rs 22.15 LPA, and highest of Rs 37.63 LPA (2025 placement data). Strategy and Consulting is the top domain, accounting for 45% of placements.
Integrated MSc and MSc programmes: Admission through IIT JAM for five-year and two-year science programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, and other disciplines.
PhD: Research doctorates across all departments. Admission through department-specific tests and interviews.
Campus and infrastructure
IIT Kharagpur’s campus at 2,100 acres is the largest of any IIT. The campus functions as a self-contained township, complete with schools, hospitals, shopping facilities, banks, and extensive sports infrastructure. The 22 residential halls (hostels) are spread across the campus.
The campus contains the Central Library (one of India’s largest academic libraries), multiple computing centres, research laboratories, the STEP (Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park) incubation centre, and various sports facilities including a swimming pool, cricket ground, football fields, and indoor sports complexes.
The nearest major city is Kolkata (approximately 120 km), connected by frequent train services. Kharagpur itself is a significant railway junction on the Howrah-Mumbai rail line.
Things to verify before applying
- BTech branch vs IIT: IIT KGP’s JEE Advanced rank requirements vary substantially by branch. The Computer Science programme closes at significantly lower ranks than programmes like Ocean Engineering. Research which department aligns with your interest before deciding.
- Fee waivers: BTech tuition is Rs 1 lakh per semester for general category students with family income above Rs 5 lakh. If family income is below Rs 5 lakh, the fee reduces to Rs 33,335 per semester; below Rs 1 lakh, it is fully waived. Verify current income thresholds via JoSAA counselling.
- VGSoM vs IIM: VGSoM at IIT KGP offers a functional alternative to IIM programmes for CAT takers who value the IIT brand and a smaller cohort (around 140-150 students per batch). The average package (Rs 22.75 LPA) is lower than the older IIMs but the fee (Rs 11.75 lakh) is also significantly lower.
- NIRF Management rank: VGSoM’s NIRF Management rank was 19 in 2024, down from 5 in 2020, reflecting increased competition from other management institutions. This is different from the institute’s Engineering rank of 5.
- Campus location: Kharagpur is a smaller city. Candidates who prefer proximity to a metropolitan area should factor this in, especially for internships during the MBA or BTech.
