What Illinois Institute of Technology Mumbai is

Illinois Institute of Technology Mumbai (Illinois Tech Mumbai) is the Mumbai campus of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private research university based in Chicago, USA, founded in 1890. It is the first US university campus to open in India under the UGC’s Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEI) regulations. The campus is located in the Godrej Business District in Vikhroli, an eastern suburb of Mumbai, and is expected to welcome its first students in August 2026.

Degrees awarded at the Mumbai campus are Illinois Tech degrees — identical in standing to those awarded at the Chicago campus. Illinois Tech’s Chicago campus is ranked #1 in Illinois and #22 in the US for Best Graduate Salaries by the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026, and its computer science programs are in the Top 100 nationally by US News & World Report.

Illinois Tech is the only US university to offer all students the Elevate programme — a structured commitment guaranteeing access to internships, research opportunities, competitions, study away, and career-focused short courses. This applies to Mumbai campus students as well.

Who it’s for

Illinois Tech Mumbai suits students interested in STEM and business careers who want a US university degree while studying in India. The campus is particularly relevant for students targeting:

  • AI, machine learning, and software engineering careers
  • Data science roles in industry
  • Business and IT management positions
  • MBA-track careers with a technology focus

The initial intake of approximately 250–300 students across all programs means the first cohorts will be small. Admission does not go through CUET, JEE, or any centralised Indian entrance exam.

Campus and infrastructure

The campus is located in the Godrej Business District, Vikhroli — an eastern Mumbai suburb with direct access to employment hubs and strong public transport connectivity. The Godrej campus situates students within an established commercial zone that includes major corporate offices.

Planned facilities include purpose-built classrooms, advanced laboratories, digital library resources, residential facilities, and student recreation spaces, aligned to Illinois Tech’s global standards. Faculty will include Illinois Tech Chicago faculty leading modules and guest lectures, supplemented by Indian faculty with industry experience.

Illinois Tech’s research enterprise spans $50 million in externally funded research annually (Chicago campus), with partnerships including Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab. Mumbai campus students will have access to research collaboration pathways.
