What Indian Statistical Institute is

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was founded by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis on December 17, 1931, in Kolkata. In 1959, it was declared an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament, a status shared by only a handful of institutions in India, including the IITs and IIMs.

ISI is headquartered at Baranagar, Kolkata (also referred to as the Kolkata campus), with major centres in Delhi and Bangalore, and a newer centre at Tezpur (North-East). The institute is globally recognised for its foundational contributions to statistics and probability theory. ISI has been described as the nursery of statistics in India: the subject of statistics as taught and practiced at ISI has shaped the discipline nationally and internationally.

Unlike multi-faculty universities, ISI has a narrow and deliberately deep focus. It does not offer programmes in law, medicine, commerce, or engineering in the conventional sense. Its entire academic identity is built around statistics, mathematics, quantitative economics, and computer science.

Who it’s for

ISI is for students with genuine and serious interest in theoretical statistics or mathematics, students who want to work at the frontier of these disciplines in academia, research, finance, or technology.

The admission process is considered among the most selective in India for any UG programme. The ISI Admission Test for BStat and BMath is a pure mathematics examination at a level well beyond typical Class 12 syllabi. Students who have qualified for or cleared Regional / National Mathematical Olympiads (RMO, IMO, INMO) are the natural target audience.

At the postgraduate level, MStat from ISI Kolkata is a highly regarded credential for roles in quantitative finance, data science, and academic research. ISI’s MS in Quantitative Economics is sought after by students aiming for research economics careers and doctoral programmes abroad.

Programs offered

Undergraduate:

  • BStat (Honours), 3-year Bachelor of Statistics, offered at Kolkata. The flagship UG programme. Admission via ISI Admission Test.
  • BMath (Honours), 3-year Bachelor of Mathematics, offered at Bangalore. Admission via ISI Admission Test.
  • BSDS (Honours), Bachelor of Statistical Data Science, a newer programme. Admission via JEE Main / CUET UG scores (not the ISI Admission Test).

Postgraduate:

  • MSc Statistics (MStat), 2 years, offered at Kolkata and Delhi. Admission via ISI Admission Test.
  • MSc Mathematics (MMath), 2 years, offered at Kolkata and Bangalore. Admission via ISI Admission Test.
  • MS (Quantitative Economics), 2 years, Kolkata. Admission via ISI Admission Test.
  • MTech in Computer Science, 2 years, Kolkata. Admission via GATE or ISI test.
  • MTech in Cryptology & Security, 2 years, Kolkata.
  • PGDBA, 2-year Postgraduate Diploma in Business Analytics (joint with IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta). Separate admission test.

Research (PhD pathway):

  • Junior Research Fellowships in Statistics, Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Computer Science, and QROR. JRF holders complete coursework and thesis under supervisor guidance.

Note: BSc Statistics as a 3-year Honours programme is the closest mapping to the BStat offered at ISI Kolkata.

Campus and infrastructure

ISI Kolkata’s main campus is located at 203, Barrackpore Trunk Road, Baranagar, Kolkata, about 8 km from the city centre. The campus is compact but research-intensive, with strong library holdings, computing facilities, and active research groups. Residential accommodation is available for students.

The Delhi centre (New Delhi) and Bangalore centre offer selected programmes and have their own campuses. Some PG programmes (MStat, MMath) are offered across multiple campuses, students can indicate preferences at the time of application.

Things to verify before applying

  • Admission test difficulty: The ISI Admission Test for BStat/BMath is categorically different from standard Class 12 level examinations. Preparation materials include ISI’s own past question papers. Do not underestimate the level, NCERT-level preparation is insufficient.
  • Limited seats: BStat at Kolkata typically has 60–70 seats for the general (non-reserved) category across all categories. Competition is extreme.
  • BSDS vs BStat: BSDS is admitted through JEE Main / CUET UG and is a newer programme. BStat is the historically prestigious programme. Both are at ISI but have different admission routes and different characters.
  • Campus location preference: MStat is available at both Kolkata and Delhi. MMath is at Kolkata and Bangalore. Confirm which campus is being offered for your programme at the time of application.
  • Stipend for JRFs: Junior Research Fellows at ISI receive a monthly stipend, verify current rates on the ISI official website.
  • PGDBA admissions: The PGDBA is jointly run with IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta and has its own separate test and selection process.
