What Jamia Millia Islamia is

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a central university established in 1920 at Aligarh, later relocated to Delhi in 1925, and granted Central University status by an Act of Parliament in 1988. The university is located on a 239-acre campus in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi (JMI Prospectus 2025-26).

JMI is ranked 4th among Indian universities by NIRF 2025 (previously 3rd in NIRF 2024). The university holds the highest NAAC accreditation grade of A++ (second cycle, 2021). Internationally, JMI is ranked 851-900 by QS World University Rankings 2025 and 501-600 by Times Higher Education.

The university operates 11 faculties, 48 departments, 29 research centres, and 7 schools, offering a total of 286 programs — 58 at the Ph.D. level, 97 postgraduate, 55 undergraduate, and the rest across diploma and certificate levels (JMI Prospectus 2025-26). JMI enrolls approximately 10,500 regular students (with additional students in distance/open learning programs) and has 743 faculty members, with a demand ratio of 1:19.

Who it’s for

Jamia attracts students across a wide range of disciplines. It is particularly strong in humanities, social sciences, education, law, and architecture — areas where many central universities in Delhi are competitive, but JMI’s combination of NAAC A++ accreditation, low fees (as a central university), and Delhi location makes it a high-value option.

For engineering students, JMI admits through JEE Main scores, offering B.Tech programs in Computer Engineering, Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, and Mechanical Engineering. Architecture admission is through NATA.

Students interested in law will find JMI’s Faculty of Law offers BA LLB and LLM programs. The Faculty of Education is among the oldest in India. JMI’s Residential Coaching Academy is well-regarded for Civil Services preparation, producing 25-35 selections per year in recent cycles (JMI Prospectus 2025-26).

About 60% of JMI students come from outside Delhi-NCR and approximately 3% are international students from over 30 countries. About one-third of the student body is female (JMI Prospectus 2025-26).

As a central university, JMI’s fees are significantly lower than private institutions. This makes it a target for students seeking quality education at affordable costs, particularly in humanities, social sciences, and law.

Placement outcomes vary sharply by program category. NIRF 2025 reports median salaries of ₹13.78 LPA for B.Tech (4-year), ₹14.40 LPA for integrated programs (BA LLB, B.Arch), ₹7.80 LPA for 3-year UG programs, and ₹15.00 LPA / ₹12.60 LPA for M.Tech / MBA respectively. See the detailed placement data for full breakdowns.

Campus and infrastructure

JMI’s 239-acre campus is located in Jamia Nagar, South Delhi, well-connected by the Jamia Millia Islamia metro station on the Magenta Line (JMI Prospectus 2025-26).

Key infrastructure:

  • Dr. Zakir Husain Library: Central library with 6 lakh+ books, 6,000 rare books, 2,243 rare manuscripts, 7,000 subscribed e-journals, and access to 32 academic databases
  • Hostels: About 30% of students receive hostel accommodation. The university is partly residential — priority goes to outstation students
  • Health Centre: Ansari Health Centre provides free primary healthcare; Faculty of Dentistry and Centre for Physiotherapy also serve students
  • Sports Complex: Air-conditioned indoor stadium, cricket ground (has hosted Ranji Trophy and Women’s World Cup matches), facilities for football, tennis, badminton, basketball, hockey, and table tennis
  • Research Centres: 30+ centres including AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, FTK Centre for Information Technology

The campus location in New Delhi provides easy access to internship and employment opportunities, government institutions, and cultural resources. Being in a metro-connected part of South Delhi is a significant advantage over suburban or rural campuses.

Things to verify before applying

  • Admission route for your program: Different programs use different entrance exams — CUET-UG for select UG programs, JEE Main for B.Tech, NATA for B.Arch, NEET-UG for BDS, and JMI’s own entrance test for many others. Confirm which exam applies to your program at jmi.ac.in/Admissions.
  • Hostel availability: Only ~30% of students get hostel accommodation. If you are from outside Delhi, confirm hostel availability and waitlist policies before accepting admission.
  • Fee structure for your specific program: As a central university, fees vary widely by program. Confirm the exact fee at the admissions portal.
  • Reservation and special categories: JMI has specific reservation policies (including for Muslim minority candidates and internal JMI students). Verify eligibility criteria for your category.
  • Application deadlines: Deadlines vary by program and entrance exam route. Monitor the admissions portal for updated timelines.
