Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a central university established in 1920 at Aligarh, later relocated to Delhi in 1925, and granted Central University status by an Act of Parliament in 1988. The university is located on a 239-acre campus in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi (JMI Prospectus 2025-26).

JMI is ranked 4th among Indian universities by NIRF 2025 (previously 3rd in NIRF 2024). The university holds the highest NAAC accreditation grade of A++ (second cycle, 2021). Internationally, JMI is ranked 851-900 by QS World University Rankings 2025 and 501-600 by Times Higher Education.

The university operates 11 faculties, 48 departments, 29 research centres, and 7 schools, offering a total of 286 programs — 58 at the Ph.D. level, 97 postgraduate, 55 undergraduate, and the rest across diploma and certificate levels (JMI Prospectus 2025-26). • Dr. Zakir Husain Library: Central library with 6 lakh+ books, 6,000 rare books, 2,243 rare manuscripts, 7,000 subscribed e-journals, and access to 32 academic databases
• Hostels: About 30% of students receive hostel accommodation. The university is partly residential — priority goes to outstation students
