What NALSAR is

NALSAR University of Law, established in 1998 under Act 34 of the Telangana legislature, is one of India’s three consistently top-ranked national law universities alongside NLSIU Bangalore and NLU Delhi. Located on a 50-acre residential campus near Shameerpet, 20 km from Hyderabad, it has held the NIRF Rank 3 position in the Law category in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023 (NIRF Law Rankings 2024).

The NAAC awarded NALSAR an ‘A++’ grade with a score of 3.52 out of 4.00 in Cycle II — the highest score recorded among National Law Universities at the time (NALSAR CLAT 2025 Brochure). The UGC has designated it a Category-I University under the Graded Autonomy Regulations, 2018.

NALSAR is recognised for the breadth and flexibility of its Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), which it adopted in 2012–13. Among the NLUs, it offers the broadest range of elective, seminar, and clinical courses, spanning five specialisation groups: Constitution and Public Policy, Corporate Laws, International Laws, Law and Technology, and Social Science.

Who it’s for

BA LLB (Hons): Students who want a rigorous, interdisciplinary law degree at one of India’s top three NLUs and are prepared to compete near the top of the CLAT merit list. NALSAR’s General category All India closing rank at CLAT has typically been in the range of AIR 130–200. It is a residential programme; campus life is central to the experience.

LLM: NALSAR’s LLM is explicitly oriented towards teaching, research, and civil/judicial services preparation rather than commercial law firm recruitment — the brochure states this directly. Students who want a research track in law or intend to enter academia will find the programme more suitable than those seeking lateral placement at a Tier-1 law firm (NALSAR Programmes Brochure).

MBA: A two-year AICTE-approved programme with specialisations in Business Laws, Corporate Governance, Finance, HR, Marketing, Operations, and Business Analytics. Unusual in an NLU setting — the law-infused environment is a differentiator over standalone business schools.

BBA MBA (IPM): The 5-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) awards both BBA and MBA after completing the programme. Students may exit with a BBA after 3 years. This is similar in structure to IIM IPM programmes.

Campus and infrastructure

The campus sits on 50 acres in Shameerpet (Justice City), Medchal-Malkajgiri District. All BA LLB students are housed in double-occupancy residential halls. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled with a dedicated broadband speed of at least 20 Mbps. Facilities include a Moot Court Hall, football stadium, two tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, a Library with print and electronic resources and e-databases, a Health Centre with Medical Officers, and a Counselling Centre. Generator backup covers all buildings including hostels (NALSAR CLAT 2025 Brochure).

Student life centres on the Student Bar Council, moot courts (two annual inter-institutional competitions), a debating championship, Quizzing Festival, Literary Festival, and student-run groups including the Public Policy Group, Technology Law Forum, and NALSAR Legal Aid Group. Approximately 10–15 students each year participate in exchange programmes under MoUs with 30+ universities in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and elsewhere.

Things to verify before applying

  • CLAT cutoff fluctuates year to year: The NALSAR General All India closing rank has varied across CLAT cycles. Confirm current-year cutoffs from the Consortium of NLUs website after CLAT 2025 counselling rounds are published.
  • Telangana domicile seats: 25% of BA LLB (33 seats) and LLM (16 seats) seats are reserved for Resident Students of Telangana. Eligibility requires 4 consecutive years of study in Telangana or 4 years of residence in the state in the 7 years preceding the qualifying exam.
  • Fee increases: The BA LLB Tuition Fee increases by Rs 5,000 per year for each newly admitting batch. The 2025 fee schedule should be verified directly with NALSAR admissions before applying.
  • Mess fees are separate: Mess charges are approximately Rs 40,000 per year, payable in advance, and not included in the main fee table.
  • LLM not suited for law firm placement: NALSAR’s own brochure explicitly states that the LLM has not been designed to facilitate commercial law firm recruitment. Confirm this fits your goals before applying.
  • MBA and IPM admission process: Seat matrix, fees, and admission process for the DoMS programmes (MBA and BBA MBA) are maintained separately at https://doms.nalsar.ac.in.
