National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal was established in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) and was granted Institute of National Importance status in 2002 under the NIT Act. It is ranked #17 in Engineering and #46 Overall in the NIRF 2024 rankings (NIRF Engineering Rankings 2024), making it the second-highest ranked NIT after NIT Tiruchirappalli (ranked #9). The campus stretches across approximately 300 acres in Surathkal on the Karnataka coast, with access to a private beach. The central library holds over 1.5 lakh books. Academic facilities include 100+ laboratories, multiple auditoriums, and a sports complex. 12 hostels accommodate students on campus. A hospital and health centre are on-site. The campus is Wi-Fi connected.
