What NLSIU is

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), established in 1986 in Bangalore, is India’s first national law school and has held the NIRF Rank 1 position in the Law category consistently (NIRF Law Rankings 2024). It was set up by the Bar Council of India to bring a rigorous, interdisciplinary approach to legal education in India, distinct from the traditional LLB attached to general universities.

NLSIU pioneered the five-year integrated BA LLB format, with its first cohort admitted in 1988. Most of India’s top law schools were modelled on the NLSIU template. Located on the Nagarbhavi campus in Bangalore, the institution operates as an autonomous central university with its own degree-granting powers.

In 2025, NLSIU launched a new BA (Hons) programme, the first non-law undergraduate degree at the institution. The programme admits 60 students annually through a separate entrance test (NLSAT-BA) and offers majors in Economics, History, Politics, and Sociology & Anthropology (NLS BA Hons Programme).

Who it’s for

BA LLB (Hons), Students who are serious about a career in corporate law, litigation, judiciary, policy, or academia and are willing to compete at the very top of the CLAT pool. The General category closing rank at NLSIU has typically been within AIR 112 in recent CLAT cycles (IMS India NLSIU Cutoff). This is not a fallback option, it requires near-perfect CLAT preparation.

BA (Hons), Students interested in social sciences and humanities who want the academic environment of a law school without committing to law practice. Admission is through the NLSAT-BA, a separate entrance exam from CLAT.

LLB (Hons) / LLM / MPP, Working professionals or graduates from other disciplines seeking a law degree or postgraduate qualification. NLSIU’s LLM is well-regarded among those entering academia, judiciary, or research-oriented legal careers.

Campus and infrastructure

NLSIU’s Nagarbhavi campus in Bangalore spans a dedicated law school environment with residential facilities. The programme is predominantly residential for BA LLB students. Karnataka students benefit from a domicile quota in the CLAT counselling process, but the majority of seats are filled through the all-India merit list.

The campus hosts moot courts, a legal aid clinic, a large law library, and active student journals and competitions. Student life is centred on law, mooting, client counselling competitions, and internships at Tier-1 law firms form a significant part of the experience outside the classroom.

Things to verify before applying

  • CLAT cutoff changes annually: General category ranks at NLSIU have fluctuated between AIR 47 (2024) and AIR 152 (2023 cycle). Confirm current year cutoffs from the Consortium of NLUs.
  • BA (Hons) programme fees: Per the official BA Hons Brochure 2025, the first-year cost is Rs 4,50,000 (SC/ST) or Rs 4,54,500 (others), inclusive of a refundable deposit. Annual tuition and facilities fee is Rs 2,96,000. Fees are subject to revision, confirm current figures with NLSIU admissions.
  • NLSAT-BA exam date: A separate entrance test, not CLAT. Check the NLSIU admissions page for registration timelines.
  • LLM admission: Conducted via CLAT PG, not a separate NLSIU test. Confirm current seat intake and reservation policy.
  • Hostel allocation: Residential housing is prioritised for BA LLB students. Check hostel availability for LLB (Hons) and LLM students, who are placed in university-managed off-campus accommodation.
