Overview

Presidency University, Kolkata, originally founded as Hindu College in 1817, is one of the oldest and most historically significant educational institutions in India.[1] It became Presidency College in 1855 and was upgraded to Presidency University in 2010 by the West Bengal government.

The university holds NAAC A accreditation and has an extraordinary legacy in producing Nobel laureates, national leaders, and scholars, including Subhas Chandra Bose, Amartya Sen, and Satyajit Ray attended Presidency College.[1]

Located in College Street, the intellectual heart of Kolkata, Presidency offers BA, BSc, and MA programs at nominal fees. As a state university, it follows its own curriculum (not affiliated to Calcutta University since 2010) and admits students through CUET UG.

Academic Programs

BA (Hons) Programs:[2]

  • Economics, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Bengali, Geography, Hindi

BSc (Hons):

  • Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Physiology, Life Sciences

Presidency is particularly renowned for its Economics, English, and History departments. The teaching tradition emphasises rigorous academic inquiry and seminar-based learning.

Note: Since becoming a university in 2010, Presidency sets its own curriculum and examination standards, distinct from Calcutta University.

Campus and Location

Presidency University’s main campus is on College Street in central Kolkata, surrounded by bookshops, the Coffee House (a legendary intellectual gathering spot), and the Indian Museum. The Baker Building, dating to the colonial era, is an architectural landmark.

A second campus at Rajarhat (New Town) houses some departments and provides modern infrastructure. The College Street campus is historic but compact.

Kolkata’s cultural richness, theatre, literature, cinema, music, makes it a unique backdrop for humanities education. Living costs in Kolkata are among the lowest of India’s major cities.

Who Applies Here

Presidency attracts academically driven students from West Bengal and eastern India who value institutional legacy, rigorous academics, and extremely affordable education. The university’s alumni list is unmatched among state institutions.

At ~INR 2,000-5,000 per year, Presidency is essentially free compared to private universities. Students compare it with Jadavpur University (also Kolkata, state university) and top DU colleges for humanities quality. The trade-off is infrastructure, Presidency’s historic campus lacks the modern facilities of private universities.[3]

Students seeking a liberal arts environment with flexible curricula may find Presidency’s traditional department-based structure restrictive compared to Ashoka or FLAME.

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • CUET UG admission: Presidency now uses CUET UG for undergraduate admission. Check the latest admission process on the official site.

  • Hostel availability: Limited hostel capacity. Kolkata PG accommodation is affordable but plan in advance.
  • State university status: Presidency is a West Bengal state university. Fee structures, reservation policies, and scholarship schemes follow state government norms.
  • Placement infrastructure: Formal campus placements are limited. Career outcomes depend on competitive exams, graduate school, and individual networking.
