Overview

Sophia College for Women is a Christian minority institution in Mumbai, established in 1940 by the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RSCJ). The college became affiliated to the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1941 and celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 2017 (Sophia Handbook 2025-26).

The college has achieved NAAC A grade in four consecutive accreditation cycles and was granted academic autonomy by UGC in 2018. It received “Empowered Autonomous” status in 2023, enabling it to design its own degree programmes and assessment schemes (Sophia Handbook 2025-26).

Sophia is a women-only institution at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes are open to all. The college currently has approximately 2,000 students (Sophia Handbook 2025-26).

  • Aided vs self-financed: Some programmes are aided (subsidised fees), others are self-financed. Confirm fee category for your chosen programme.
  • Minority institution: Christian minority quotas apply per government norms. Verify reservation policies.
  • No campus housing: The college does not appear to have on-campus hostels. Factor accommodation costs in Mumbai.
