SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), established in 1985 and granted deemed university status in 2006, is headquartered at Kattankulathur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. SRM is ranked 22nd overall, 11th among universities, and 14th in engineering by NIRF 2025. It also ranks 10th in Pharmacy, 18th in Medical, 8th in Dental, 25th in Law, and 33rd in Agriculture. SRM holds NAAC A++ accreditation (NIRF 2025).

SRMIST operates multiple campuses: Kattankulathur (main campus, ~250 acres), Ramapuram (Chennai), Vadapalani (Chennai), NCR (Modinagar, UP), Trichy, and Acharapakkam. The SRM University AP (Amaravati) is a separate institution.

Who it’s for

SRM Chennai serves a similar applicant pool as VIT Vellore — engineering aspirants looking for a private university option with strong placement outcomes. SRMIST admits through SRMJEEE (SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Exam), and many students who take JEE Main also appear for SRMJEEE as a backup.

The Kattankulathur campus is the flagship and the most sought-after for B.Tech programs. SRM’s recruiter access includes Microsoft, Amazon, TCS, Infosys, and Deloitte, making placements the primary draw.

SRM also offers MBBS through NEET-UG, making it relevant for medical aspirants — the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre is at the Kattankulathur campus.

Students should be aware that SRM has multiple campuses with different academic reputations and placement records. The Kattankulathur campus has the strongest profile; the Ramapuram campus (NIRF-ranked separately) is also well-regarded but has a different profile.

The Kattankulathur campus is located about 35 km south of central Chennai, connected by road and a nearby railway station. It is more accessible than VIT Vellore’s location but still suburban.

The Kattankulathur campus (~250 acres) is the main campus with:

• Campus-specific fee structure: Fees vary between Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, and other campuses. Confirm the fee for your specific campus and program.
• Campus-wise cutoffs: CSE at Kattankulathur has higher cutoffs than the same branch at other campuses.
• MBBS admission: Medical admissions are through NEET-UG and counselled separately. Fees for MBBS are significantly higher than engineering.
