Overview
St. Stephen’s College, established in 1881, is the oldest constituent college of the University of Delhi and one of the most prestigious undergraduate institutions in India.[1] Located on the North Campus of Delhi University, St. Stephen’s has a distinctive Anglo-Catholic heritage and a fiercely loyal alumni network spanning politics, journalism, literature, civil services, and business.
St. Stephen’s is unique among DU colleges in maintaining an independent admission process, in addition to CUET UG scores, the college conducts its own interview as part of the selection process (85% CUET + 15% interview).[2] This dual process adds a qualitative filter that other DU colleges do not apply.
The college is coeducational but has historically been known for its exclusive social culture, debating tradition, and the “Stephanian” identity. St. Stephen’s does not currently hold NAAC accreditation, it has opted out of the NAAC assessment process.
Academic Programs
BA (Hons) Programs:[1]
- Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, Sanskrit
BA Programme (Multidisciplinary):
- Various subject combinations
BSc (Hons):
- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
St. Stephen’s is particularly renowned for its Economics, English, and History departments. The teaching is supplemented by the college’s tutorial system, modelled on Oxbridge traditions.
Note: The BA (Hons) follows the DU curriculum, but the college’s academic culture, tutorials, reading groups, debates, adds an enrichment layer beyond the standard DU experience.
Campus and Location
St. Stephen’s occupies a 20-acre campus on the North Campus of Delhi University, near the University Metro station. The campus features colonial-era architecture, including the iconic chapel, Residence (men’s hostel), and the Allender Court.
The college has limited hostel capacity, the Residence accommodates a small fraction of the student body. Most students commute or arrange PG accommodation in nearby areas like Kamla Nagar or Vijay Nagar.
North Campus DU is the intellectual hub of Delhi, surrounded by other top colleges, the university library, coffee houses, and a vibrant student social scene.
Who Applies Here
St. Stephen’s attracts high-achieving students from across India who value the college’s prestige, intellectual culture, and alumni network. The dual admission process (CUET + interview) adds selectivity beyond mere exam scores.
The college is frequently compared with LSR, Hindu College, and SRCC within DU. Among private alternatives, students may choose between Stephen’s (affordable, prestigious, DU curriculum) and Ashoka/FLAME (flexible liberal arts, residential, significantly more expensive).[3]
The “Stephanian” brand carries significant weight in certain professional circles, particularly media, civil services, diplomacy, and academia. However, the college’s exclusive culture and lack of NAAC accreditation are discussed points in community forums.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- Dual admission process: St. Stephen’s uses 85% CUET UG score + 15% college interview. Prepare for both. The interview assesses communication, critical thinking, and general awareness.
- Limited hostel availability: The Residence (men’s hostel) has limited seats. Women’s hostel availability is very limited. Plan for off-campus accommodation.
- No NAAC accreditation: St. Stephen’s has opted out of NAAC assessment. This does not affect the DU degree but may matter for some scholarship or government scheme eligibility.
- DU curriculum constraints: Like all DU colleges, St. Stephen’s follows the DU-prescribed syllabus. The tutorial system is an enrichment, not a replacement for the standard curriculum.
- Minority quota: St. Stephen’s reserves 50% of seats for Christian minority candidates. Non-Christian applicants compete for the remaining 50%.
