Overview

St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, established in 1869 by the Jesuits, is one of India’s most prestigious undergraduate institutions.[1] Located in the heart of South Mumbai (opposite the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus), the college is an autonomous institution affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It holds NAAC A+ accreditation.

The college operates in the Jesuit educational tradition, emphasising academic rigour, ethics, and comprehensive development. St. Xavier’s has a distinguished alumni list spanning business (Ratan Tata), politics, law, and the arts.[1]

As an autonomous college, St. Xavier’s sets its own curriculum, conducts examinations, and has greater academic flexibility than affiliated colleges, while awarding degrees under the University of Mumbai.

Academic Programs

BA Programs:[2]

  • Economics, Psychology, Mass Communication & Journalism (MCJ), English, Sociology, History, Political Science, French, Ancient Indian Culture

BSc/BCom:

  • Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences, IT, Statistics, Commerce (multiple streams)

St. Xavier’s is particularly known for its MCJ (Mass Communication & Journalism) program, one of the most competitive media programs in Mumbai, and its Economics department.

Campus and Location

St. Xavier’s 5-acre campus is in the Fort area of South Mumbai, adjacent to CSMVS (the old VT station) and the Kala Ghoda art district. The heritage building is an architectural landmark. Despite the compact campus, the location in Mumbai’s cultural and business heart is unmatched.

The college does not have residential hostel facilities. Students commute from across Mumbai or arrange PG accommodation. The South Mumbai location provides access to media houses, financial institutions, galleries, and the city’s cultural infrastructure.

Who Applies Here

St. Xavier’s attracts high-achieving students from Mumbai and across India who value the college’s Jesuit heritage, South Mumbai location, and strong alumni network. BA MCJ is among the most competitive media programs in the country.

At ~INR 12,000-85,000 per year (aided streams are cheaper than self-financed), Xavier’s is affordable. Students compare it with Jai Hind, Mithibai, and KC College within Mumbai, and with top DU colleges nationally.[3]

The trade-off: Xavier’s is a traditional college (not a flexible liberal arts institution), non-residential, and follows the Mumbai University framework with autonomous enhancements.

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • Xavier’s Entrance Test (XET): XET is required for BA MCJ, BMS, and some self-financed programs. Aided BA programs may admit on Class XII merit. Confirm the admission mode for your specific program.
  • Aided vs self-financed: Fees vary dramatically, aided sections (~INR 12-15K/year) are much cheaper than self-financed programs (~INR 50-85K/year). Confirm which category your program falls under.
  • No hostel: St. Xavier’s does not provide student accommodation. Mumbai PG/hostel costs can add INR 10,000-25,000/month.
  • Mumbai University degree: The degree is awarded by the University of Mumbai, with St. Xavier’s autonomous curriculum. Confirm the degree nomenclature.
  • Minority quota: St. Xavier’s reserves seats for Catholic minority candidates. Non-Christian applicants compete for open category seats.
