What the University of Glasgow Is
The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1451, it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world, after Oxford, Cambridge, and St Andrews. In the QS World University Rankings 2025, Glasgow is ranked 78th globally.
Glasgow is a member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 research-intensive UK universities, and is one of the original four ancient universities of Scotland. The university has produced seven Nobel laureates, including the economist Adam Smith, who studied and later taught here.
The university is organised into four colleges: Arts, Medical Veterinary and Life Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Social Sciences (which includes the Adam Smith Business School). Its main campus is at Gilmorehill in the West End of Glasgow, with additional facilities at Garscube (veterinary medicine) and research sites across the city.
For Indian students, Glasgow is primarily relevant at the postgraduate level, particularly for one-year taught master’s programmes in Computing Science, Data Science, Engineering, Economics, and Management. The university also has a strong medical school, though undergraduate medicine places for international students are extremely limited.
Who It’s For
Postgraduate applicants from India form the largest group of Indian students at Glasgow. The one-year master’s programmes in STEM and business subjects are the most common entry point. Entry requirements typically ask for a first-class or strong upper second-class degree from a recognised Indian university (equivalent to 60-65%+ from a Tier 1 institution, higher from others). IELTS 6.5 overall (with no component below 6.0) is the standard English language requirement for most programmes, though some require 7.0.
Undergraduate applicants should note that Scottish undergraduate degrees are four years, not three, which affects both duration and total cost. The Scottish MA (Master of Arts) is an undergraduate degree in arts and social science subjects, not a postgraduate qualification. Entry is through UCAS with typical offers of AAA-ABB at A-level or 36-38 IB points depending on the programme.
PhD applicants benefit from Glasgow’s strong research output and multiple funding routes, including university-funded scholarships and UKRI-funded studentships.
Glasgow is a particularly strong option for students who want a Russell Group university experience at a lower total cost than London-based institutions. Living costs in Glasgow are meaningfully lower than in London, Edinburgh, or the south of England.
Programs Popular with Indian Students
-
MSc Data Science — One year, taught by the School of Computing Science. Covers machine learning, data analytics, and statistical methods. International fees: approximately £31,520/yr (2024-25).
-
MSc Computing Science — One year. Strong focus on software engineering and systems. Glasgow’s Computing Science department is consistently ranked among the top in the UK. See also: BSc Computer Science.
-
MSc Management — One year, delivered through the Adam Smith Business School. Triple-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA). Suitable for students without a business undergraduate degree. See also: MBA.
-
MSc Economics — One year. Adam Smith’s university retains a strong economics department with strengths in development, health, and behavioural economics. See also: BA Economics.
-
MSc Aerospace Engineering / MSc Mechanical Engineering — One year each. James Watt School of Engineering is the university’s engineering hub, named after the Glasgow alumnus who improved the steam engine.
-
LLM — One year. Covers international law, corporate law, and human rights. Glasgow has one of the longest-established law schools in the UK.
-

Campus and Location
Glasgow’s main campus at Gilmorehill sits in the West End of the city, approximately 3 km from the city centre. The Gilbert Scott Building, a Gothic Revival landmark, is the visual centrepiece. The campus includes the James Watt School of Engineering, the Hunterian Museum, and the University Library.
The city of Glasgow is Scotland’s largest, with a population of around 630,000. It is well-connected by rail (Edinburgh is under an hour away) and has its own international airport. Glasgow is consistently ranked as one of the most affordable major cities in the UK for students.
Cost of living: The University of Glasgow estimates living costs at approximately £12,000-£15,000 per year. Private student accommodation in the West End typically costs £500-£700 per month. This is substantially cheaper than London (where comparable accommodation runs £800-£1,200+) and moderately cheaper than Edinburgh.
Indian community: Glasgow has a well-established South Asian community, particularly in the Southside. Indian grocery stores, restaurants, and a gurdwara are readily accessible. The university has an active Indian Students’ Society.
Post-study work: International graduates from Glasgow are eligible for the UK Graduate Route visa, which allows two years of unrestricted work in the UK after completing a degree (three years for PhD graduates). This is a significant advantage for Indian students considering UK study.
Costs and Financial Aid
International tuition fees at Glasgow for 2024-25 range from approximately £22,340 to £31,520 per year for taught postgraduate programmes, depending on the subject. Laboratory-based and clinical programmes are at the higher end. See the fees file for programme-specific figures.
Scholarships for Indian students: Glasgow offers several international scholarship schemes, including the Glasgow International Leadership Scholarship (£10,000 fee reduction) and subject-specific awards through individual schools. The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme funds students from developing countries for selected master’s programmes, covering full tuition and living costs.
Total cost estimate for a one-year master’s: Tuition (£22,000-£31,500) + living costs (£12,000-£15,000) = approximately £34,000-£46,500, or roughly ₹36-49 lakh at current exchange rates. This is meaningfully lower than comparable Russell Group programmes in London.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- English language requirements vary by programme — most require IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), but some programmes in Law and Education require IELTS 7.0. Check the specific programme page.
- Degree equivalencies: Glasgow publishes country-specific entry requirements. Verify what percentage or CGPA from your Indian university is considered equivalent to a UK 2:1 or first-class degree.
- Graduate Route visa eligibility: Confirm that your programme qualifies for the 2-year post-study work visa. Most full-time degree programmes at Glasgow do, but verify with the university’s immigration team.
- Scottish undergraduate degrees are 4 years, not 3. This affects both cost and planning relative to English universities.
- The Adam Smith Business School’s triple accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) is current — but accreditation status should be verified at the time of application as accreditations have renewal cycles.
- Scholarship deadlines are often earlier than programme application deadlines. Apply early for maximum consideration.
