What the University of Warwick Is

The University of Warwick is a public research university located on the outskirts of Coventry in the West Midlands, England. Despite its name, the campus is not in the town of Warwick but sits on a 290-hectare site about 5 km south of Coventry city centre. Established in 1965, it is one of the newer Russell Group universities but has risen quickly in global rankings, placed 64th in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Warwick is best known for three things: Warwick Business School (WBS), which holds triple accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA, making it one of roughly 100 business schools worldwide with all three; its Economics department, which consistently ranks among the top five in the UK; and its Mathematics and Statistics department, which is one of the largest in Europe.

The university has approximately 29,000 students, of whom about 40% are international. Indian students form one of the largest non-EU international cohorts. Warwick has a single-campus model, meaning most academic departments, accommodation, and student services are on the same site, which is unusual for UK universities of its size.

Who It’s For

Warwick is a strong option for Indian students in several scenarios:

Undergraduate applicants interested in Economics, Computer Science, or Mathematics at a UK university ranked in the global top 100 but not as fiercely competitive as Oxbridge or Imperial. Typical offers for international students are A*AA to AAA at A-level or 36-38 points in the IB, depending on the course.

Postgraduate applicants looking for a one-year UK master’s in business, finance, or economics. Warwick’s MSc Finance and MBA programmes are well-regarded by recruiters in the City of London and globally. The MBA at WBS is ranked among the top 30 globally by the Financial Times.

Students who value campus life will find Warwick’s self-contained campus more similar to an Indian university experience than the dispersed city-centre model of many UK universities. The Warwick Students’ Union is regularly voted one of the highest-rated in the UK, and there is an active Indian student society.

Warwick is less suited to students who want a city-centre location. Coventry is a mid-sized city without the cultural draw of London, Manchester, or Edinburgh. The campus is suburban and car access is limited for students, though bus services to Coventry and Leamington Spa are frequent.

  • BSc Economics — Three years. Warwick Economics is consistently ranked top 5 in the UK. The department has strong quantitative orientation. International tuition: approximately £29,640/yr (2024-25).

  • BSc Computer Science — Three years. Covers algorithms, software engineering, AI, and systems. The department has connections to the Warwick Manufacturing Group and the Alan Turing Institute. International tuition: approximately £32,640/yr (2024-25).

  • BSc Mathematics — Three years. One of the largest maths departments in Europe, with research strengths in number theory, combinatorics, and applied mathematics.

  • BSc Accounting and Finance — Three years. Delivered through WBS. Strong placement record into accounting and financial services firms.

  • MBA — One year full-time. Warwick’s MBA is delivered at WBS and is AMBA-accredited. Strong links with London financial sector employers.

  • MSc Finance — One year. One of the most applied-to programmes at WBS. Requires strong quantitative background.

  • MSc Business Analytics — One year. Data-focused programme attracting students with engineering or statistics backgrounds.

Campus and Location

Warwick’s campus is self-contained and sits between Coventry and Kenilworth in the West Midlands. The nearest major city is Birmingham (about 30 minutes by train from Coventry). London is approximately 1 hour 10 minutes by direct train from Coventry station.

Key campus features:

Accommodation: Warwick guarantees accommodation to all first-year international undergraduates. Campus residences range from en-suite to shared bathroom options, with weekly rents typically between £130 and £210 per week (2024-25). The campus also houses a significant number of postgraduate residences.

Warwick Arts Centre: The largest arts centre in the UK outside London, hosting theatre, music, cinema, and exhibitions on campus.

Sports facilities: A full sports centre, swimming pool, tennis courts, and playing fields are on campus. Warwick has a strong inter-university sports programme.

Living costs: Coventry and the surrounding area are significantly cheaper than London. The university estimates living costs of approximately £12,000-£14,000 per year for a single student, which is lower than London-based universities.

Costs and Financial Aid

International undergraduate tuition fees at Warwick range from approximately £27,160 to £34,640 per year depending on the programme (2024-25 rates). Laboratory-based courses (Engineering, Computer Science) are at the higher end.

Warwick offers the following scholarships relevant to Indian students:

  • Warwick Undergraduate Global Excellence Scholarship: Covers full tuition fees for a limited number of international undergraduates each year. Highly competitive.
  • Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship: For postgraduate research students, covering fees and a maintenance stipend.
  • WBS Scholarships: Various merit-based awards for MBA and MSc programmes, typically ranging from £5,000 to £15,000.

Post-study work: As a UK university, Warwick graduates are eligible for the Graduate Route visa, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK for 2 years after completing a degree (3 years for PhD graduates).

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • UCAS deadline: Warwick uses the standard UCAS deadline of 31 January for most undergraduate courses (unlike Oxford and Cambridge, which require October submission). However, popular programmes may fill early.
  • English language requirements: Typically IELTS 6.5-7.0 overall depending on the programme, with minimum component scores. Some programmes accept alternatives like TOEFL or PTE.
  • Entry requirements: Warwick accepts Indian CBSE and ISC board qualifications for undergraduate entry but typically requires additional qualifications such as A-levels or IB alongside or in lieu of board results. Verify specific requirements for your programme.
  • WBS postgraduate programmes are very competitive: MSc Finance receives thousands of applications for approximately 150 places. Apply early.
  • Visa and CAS: Warwick issues CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) for student visa applications. Processing times vary, so apply well in advance of your intended start date.
