What the University of Washington Is

The University of Washington (UW, commonly called “UDub”) is a public research university in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1861, it is the oldest public university on the US West Coast and one of the most research-productive universities in the world, consistently ranking among the top 5 in the US for federal research funding.

UW is ranked 63rd globally by QS in 2025. The university’s flagship programme is computer science — the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering is ranked in the top 10 nationally and is one of the most competitive CS graduate programmes in the country. UW’s engineering, information science, and business programmes are also nationally ranked.

The university’s location in Seattle is a defining advantage. Amazon is headquartered less than 5 km from campus. Microsoft’s Redmond campus is a 30-minute drive. Boeing, Google, Meta, and dozens of other major tech companies have significant operations in the Seattle metro area. This proximity creates an unusually direct pipeline from UW programmes to industry employment.

For Indian students, UW is primarily relevant for its CS and engineering graduate programmes, the Foster School of Business MBA, information science programmes (the iSchool), and data science. Many of these are STEM-designated.

Who It’s For

Graduate applicants from India are the primary Indian cohort at UW. The Allen School’s MS in Computer Science and Engineering is extremely selective (acceptance rate approximately 5-8%), but the university offers other strong graduate pathways in ECE, Information Management, and Data Science that are somewhat less competitive. GRE is required for some programmes; check individual programme requirements. TOEFL 92+ or IELTS 7.0 is standard.

Undergraduate applicants should understand that UW’s admission works differently from most US universities. UW does not guarantee admission to specific departments at the point of university admission — students are admitted to the university and then must apply to their desired major (called “competitive admission to major”). For the Allen School CS programme, this means even admitted UW students must compete for CS spots, with internal acceptance rates that are highly competitive. International applicants need strong SAT/ACT scores and a holistic application.

Students targeting West Coast tech careers will benefit from UW’s deep ties to Seattle’s tech sector. Internship and full-time recruiting from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Boeing is built into the academic calendar.

UW is particularly strong for students who want a top-tier CS or engineering education at public university tuition (lower than private alternatives like CMU or Stanford), with direct access to one of the three major US tech hubs (alongside the Bay Area and New York).

  • MS Computer Science and Engineering (Allen School) — 1.5-2 years. STEM-designated. One of the most competitive CS master’s programmes in the US. Research-oriented with thesis requirement. Graduates are heavily recruited by Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and startups. See also: BSc Computer Science.

  • MS Electrical and Computer Engineering — 1.5-2 years. STEM-designated. Strong in signals, systems, VLSI, and embedded systems. Research faculty with active industry collaborations.

  • MS in Information Management (MSIM) — 2 years. Offered by the Information School (iSchool). STEM-designated. Covers data management, UX, product management, and information systems. Less competitive than the Allen School but with strong tech placement.

  • MSc Data Science — 1.5 years. STEM-designated. Interdisciplinary, drawing from CS, statistics, and applied mathematics. Growing programme with strong demand.

  • MBA (Foster School of Business) — 2 years, full-time. AACSB-accredited. STEM-designated MBA available through the Technology Management concentration. GMAT or GRE required. Strong placement into tech (Amazon, Microsoft) and consulting.

  • MS in Technology Innovation (MSTI) — 1 year. Offered through the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX), a partnership between UW and Tsinghua University. STEM-designated. Project-based programme focused on tech product development.

  • BA Economics / MA Economics — The economics department has strengths in labour, public, and environmental economics. The MA is a 2-year research-oriented programme.

Campus and Location

UW’s main campus covers 290 hectares in the University District of Seattle, bordered by the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the north and Portage Bay to the south. The campus includes the Husky Stadium, the Suzzallo Library (one of the most architecturally notable university libraries in the US), and extensive green space with views of Mount Rainier on clear days.

Seattle is a major city (population ~740,000, metro area ~4 million) on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest. It is the largest city in Washington state and one of the fastest-growing major US cities.

Tech ecosystem: Amazon (HQ), Microsoft (Redmond), Boeing (manufacturing), Google (Kirkland), Meta (offices), Apple (offices), and hundreds of startups are within the metro area. This creates one of the densest tech employment markets in the US outside the Bay Area.

Cost of living: Seattle is expensive, though somewhat less so than San Francisco. Shared student housing near UW runs USD 900-1,500/month. The University District has relatively more affordable options compared to downtown Seattle. Food, transport (ORCA card for public transit), and other costs add approximately USD 1,000-1,500/month.

Indian community: The Seattle metro area has a large and growing Indian community, particularly in the Eastside suburbs (Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland) where many tech workers live. Indian grocery stores, restaurants, and temples are widely available. UW has an active Indian Students Association.

STEM OPT: Graduates of STEM-designated programmes can work in the US for up to 36 months on OPT. Given Seattle’s tech employer density, UW graduates are well-positioned to use this pathway.

Costs and Financial Aid

UW is a public university, so tuition is lower than private alternatives. International graduate tuition for 2024-25 is approximately USD 35,000-40,000/yr depending on the programme. International undergraduate tuition is approximately USD 40,000/yr.

Scholarships and funding: Graduate students in the Allen School and engineering departments frequently receive research assistantships (RA) or teaching assistantships (TA) that cover tuition and provide a monthly stipend (approximately USD 2,500-3,500/month). These are competitive and not guaranteed. The Foster MBA offers merit-based scholarships to admitted students.

Total cost estimate for a 2-year MS programme (without RA/TA): Tuition (USD 37,000/yr x 2) + living costs (USD 28,000/yr x 2) = approximately USD 130,000 total, or roughly ₹1.09 crore at current exchange rates. With an RA/TA, out-of-pocket costs drop significantly.

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • Allen School MS acceptance rate is extremely low — approximately 5-8%. Apply to multiple programmes and consider the MSIM or MS Data Science as alternatives with overlapping career outcomes.
  • Competitive admission to major (undergraduate): Admission to UW does not guarantee admission to CS or engineering. Understand the internal application process and timelines.
  • GRE requirements vary by programme — some engineering programmes have waived GRE; the Allen School may require it. Verify the current policy for your target programme.
  • STEM OPT eligibility: Confirm your specific programme’s CIP code qualifies for 36-month OPT.
  • Washington state has no state income tax — this is a financial advantage for working graduates compared to California or New York.
  • Health insurance: UW requires international students to have health insurance. The UW Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) costs approximately USD 3,000-3,500/yr.
  • Housing is competitive: Apply for on-campus graduate housing early. The University District has more affordable off-campus options than many Seattle neighborhoods.
