What VIT Vellore is

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), established in 1984, is a deemed university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. VIT is ranked 14th among Indian universities and 16th in engineering by NIRF 2025, and holds NAAC A++ accreditation with a score of 3.66/4 (vit.ac.in/ranking-and-recognition). In NIRF 2024, VIT was ranked 10th among universities and 11th in engineering.

VIT operates four campuses: Vellore (main campus, 372 acres), Chennai, Amaravati (AP), and Bhopal (MP). The Vellore campus is the flagship, housing the largest share of students and offering the widest range of programs. The university enrolls approximately 51,700 students across the Vellore and Chennai campuses combined and has about 3,000 faculty members.

VIT admits B.Tech students through VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Exam), its own computer-based entrance test. The university is known for conducting one of India’s largest private entrance exams, with over 2 lakh applicants annually.

Who it’s for

VIT Vellore is a common choice for engineering aspirants who want a backup or alternative to the IIT/NIT system. Many students who take JEE Main and JEE Advanced also take VITEEE. VIT’s scale — with thousands of B.Tech seats across campuses — means it admits a wide ability range, from students with very high VITEEE ranks (who get CSE at Vellore) to those with moderate ranks (who get seats in non-CS branches or at satellite campuses).

The primary draw of VIT is its campus placement program, which is among the largest in India by volume. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Goldman Sachs, and Deloitte recruit from VIT, alongside large-scale mass recruiters (TCS, Infosys, Wipro). This recruiter access is VIT’s main value proposition.

Students should note that VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai are different campuses with different cutoffs and sometimes different placement outcomes. Vellore is the flagship campus and generally has stronger placement numbers.

The Vellore campus is located about 130 km from Chennai, in a semi-urban setting. Students who prefer a metro city campus may want to consider VIT Chennai instead.

Campus and infrastructure

The Vellore campus (372 acres) is the main campus with:

  • Academic buildings for each school
  • Central library with digital and physical collections
  • Multiple hostels (campus is residential)
  • Technology Business Incubator (TBI)
  • Innovation centre and maker spaces
  • Sports complex, gymnasium, swimming pool
  • Hospitals and health centres on campus
  • Anna Auditorium (large event venue)

The VIT Chennai campus is located at Vandalur, Chennai — closer to the IT corridor and urban amenities. The Amaravati (AP) and Bhopal (MP) campuses are newer and still developing their placement and academic records.

Vellore itself is a mid-size town. The campus is self-contained, and students rely on the on-campus ecosystem for most needs. Chennai is about 2.5-3 hours by road.

Things to verify before applying

  • VITEEE 2026 schedule: Exam dates, registration, and counselling dates are announced each year. Check vit.ac.in/admissions.
  • Campus-wise cutoff trends: CSE at Vellore has significantly higher cutoffs than CSE at other campuses. Understand realistic campus options for your expected rank.
  • Fee structure for 2026-27: The 2025-26 fee is ₹1,73,000/year (Group A) or ₹1,95,000/year (Group B for CSE). VIT revises fees annually. Confirm at vit.ac.in/admission/ug/fee-structure.
  • Hostel allotment: Not all students get their preferred hostel. Hostel accommodation is generally available but quality varies across blocks.
  • Branch-wise placement data: VIT’s overall placement statistics aggregate all branches. CSE placement outcomes differ substantially from mechanical or civil engineering.
