What University of York Mumbai is

University of York Mumbai is the first India campus of the University of York, a Russell Group research university ranked 169th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026. The University of York is ranked in the UK top 10 for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework) and holds a Gold award in the UK Teaching Excellence Framework.

The Mumbai campus is located in the Powai Business District — the same district as the Bristol and Aberdeen India campuses — placing it in Mumbai’s primary technology and innovation corridor, with direct proximity to IIT Bombay, large technology corporations, and established startups.

The campus is scheduled to open to students in September 2026. A memorandum of understanding with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra was signed in May 2025, and the campus is expected to enrol its first cohort for the 2026/27 academic year. Applications opened in January 2026.

The University of York is also the first Russell Group university to sign a strategic agreement with the National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK, reflecting a formal commitment to the Indian student community.

Who it’s for

Students seeking a Russell Group degree in Mumbai, with a focus on Computer Science (AI or Cyber Security), Business, Economics, or the Creative Industries. The MSc Artificial Intelligence programme is particularly relevant given York’s strength in the field — York’s Computer Science department is ranked in the QS World Rankings and the programme is designed with global industry input.

The campus suits students who want research-embedded teaching: the University of York has championed research as a distinctive feature of the Mumbai campus from the outset, with research aligned to India’s key priorities including health economics, biotechnology, the environment, creative industries, and digital technologies.

Students considering York Mumbai should compare it against University of Aberdeen Mumbai and University of Bristol Mumbai, both opening in Powai in the same academic year, before committing.

Campus and infrastructure

The campus is located in the Powai Business District, Hiranandani area of Mumbai. The campus building has been designed by Via Design India LLP (New Delhi-based), with interiors conceived as an open, flexible learning environment prioritising collaboration, creativity, and wellbeing — shared social spaces supporting informal study, group work, and quiet individual learning.

Features include teaching and research facilities, a library, and a large mural-style artwork of “Long Boi” — the Indian runner duck that became a popular figure at York’s UK campus — as a focal point in the interior walkways.

Food, sports, and recreational provision are available in close proximity. Powai has strong transport links, access to residential areas, green spaces including Powai Lake, and an active startup and corporate ecosystem.
