What this exam is
IPMAT — the Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test — is conducted by IIM Indore as the entrance examination for its five-year IPM (Integrated Programme in Management). The programme combines undergraduate and postgraduate management education into a single degree, leading to an MBA at the end of five years.
IIM Indore has been conducting IPMAT since 2011, when it launched the IPM programme as the first five-year integrated management programme at an IIM. The exam is designed to identify students with strong quantitative reasoning and verbal communication skills directly out of Class 12, before they pursue a dedicated undergraduate degree.
IPMAT is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted in a single day, typically in May each year. It is distinct from JIPMAT, which is the National Testing Agency (NTA)-administered exam used for admissions to IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya. IIM Rohtak also conducts a separate exam under the IPMAT name, but with a different pattern (it includes a Logical Reasoning section and has 120 questions instead of 90).
Beyond IIM Indore’s own IPM programme, several other institutions — including IIM Ranchi, IIM Shillong, IIM Amritsar, IIM Sirmaur, IIFT Kakinada, NALSAR University of Law, TAPMI, and Nirma University — use IPMAT Indore scores for their own integrated management admissions.
Who should take this exam
IPMAT is meant for students who have just completed Class 12 (or are appearing for it) and want to enter a management-focused programme immediately after school, bypassing a separate three-year undergraduate degree.
The typical candidate is:
- A Class 12 student (or recent pass-out) from any stream — Science, Commerce, or Humanities — who is certain about a management career
- Someone with strong mathematical reasoning and English skills who wants to benefit from the structured five-year curriculum at an IIM
- A student who wants to avoid the uncertainty of competing for an MBA after a BBA or other undergraduate degree, and prefers locking in an IIM seat at the Class 12 stage
IPMAT may not be the right choice for students who are undecided about management, those who want a pure undergraduate degree experience, or those targeting a specific technical or liberal arts undergraduate programme first.
Students targeting only IIM Jammu or IIM Bodh Gaya should note that those institutions accept JIPMAT scores, not IPMAT Indore. Students targeting IIM Rohtak should apply to that institution’s separately conducted IPMAT (different exam, different pattern).
Exam pattern and structure
IPMAT (IIM Indore) is a 120-minute computer-based test with 90 questions across three sections. All three sections have a fixed 40-minute time limit; candidates cannot move between sections once one has ended.

Marking scheme:
- Correct MCQ answer: +4 marks
- Incorrect MCQ answer: −1 mark
- Correct Short Answer (SA): +4 marks
- Incorrect or blank Short Answer: no negative marking
The Short Answer section requires candidates to type numerical answers directly — there are no options to choose from. This makes the QA (SA) section particularly demanding, as educated guessing is not possible and conceptual clarity is essential.
The exam is conducted in a single slot, typically in the afternoon. The mode is online (computer-based), and test centres are available across major cities in India.
Syllabus overview
IIM Indore does not publish a formally prescribed syllabus for IPMAT. The exam is based on Class 10–12 level mathematics and English, with some topics extending to standard competitive exam difficulty. The following is a section-wise breakdown based on analysis of past papers.
Quantitative Ability
The QA sections (both SA and MCQ) draw from:
- Arithmetic: Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, averages, mixtures and alligations, time–speed–distance, time and work, pipes and cisterns
- Number theory: Divisibility rules, HCF/LCM, prime factorisation, remainders, unit digit problems
- Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, sequences and series (AP, GP)
- Geometry: Lines and angles, triangles (congruence, similarity), circles, coordinate geometry (slope, distance, midpoint)
- Mensuration: Areas and perimeters of 2D shapes; surface areas and volumes of 3D solids
- Modern mathematics: Permutations, combinations, probability, set theory, Venn diagrams
- Data interpretation: Tables, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts (mostly in the MCQ section)
The Short Answer section tends to focus on clean, single-answer problems in arithmetic, algebra, and number theory. The MCQ section may include lengthier DI sets or multi-step geometry problems.
Verbal Ability
The VA section (MCQ) tests:
- Reading Comprehension: 3–4 passages of medium length (300–500 words each) with inference, main idea, tone, and vocabulary-in-context questions. RC accounts for the bulk of the section.
- Para jumbles: Rearranging 4–6 sentences into a coherent paragraph
- Para summary: Choosing the best one-sentence summary of a given paragraph
- Odd sentence out: Identifying the sentence that does not belong in a paragraph
- Grammar and sentence correction: Subject-verb agreement, tenses, pronoun usage, modifiers
- Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, analogies, fill in the blanks with contextually appropriate words
- Idioms and phrases: Meaning and usage of common idioms
Reading Comprehension is consistently the highest-weightage area in VA, making it the priority for preparation.

Candidates who are appearing for Class 12 examinations in the current year are eligible to apply, provided they meet the percentage requirement when results are declared. Students from any stream (Science, Commerce, Humanities) can apply.
There is no minimum percentage specified for Class 12 marks specifically — the 60% criterion applies to the aggregate of Class 10 and Class 12 combined.
Registration process
Registration is conducted online at iimidr.ac.in. The typical cycle for IPMAT Indore:
- Registration opens: mid-February
- Registration closes: late March / early April
- Form correction window: approximately 2 days after closure
- Admit card release: late April
- Exam: second week of May
- Results: late May / early June
- PI shortlist: first week of June
- Personal Interviews: July
- Selection list and provisional offers: late July

Payment is accepted online via debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI. The fee is non-refundable under all circumstances.
Selection process
Getting a good IPMAT score is only the first step. IIM Indore shortlists candidates for Personal Interviews (PI) based on sectional and overall cutoffs. Shortlisted candidates appear for a Written Ability Test (WAT) and PI conducted online.
Final selection at IIM Indore is based on a composite score that considers:
- IPMAT score (exam performance)
- Past academic performance (Class 10 and Class 12)
- WAT performance
- Personal Interview performance
The intake at IIM Indore is 150 seats per batch (domestic applicants).
Cutoffs and score interpretation
Understanding the scoring system
IPMAT scores are raw scores out of 360. IIM Indore releases official cutoffs at the sectional level (QA-SA, QA-MCQ, and VA) as well as an overall cutoff. Candidates must clear both the sectional and the overall cutoffs to be shortlisted for PI.

What is a good score?
For IIM Indore specifically:
- 200+ (out of 360): Competitive for a PI call (General category)
- 175–200: Borderline for IIM Indore; eligible for other IIM IPM programmes
- 150–175: Good for IIFT Kakinada, IIM Ranchi, NALSAR, and similar colleges
- Below 120: Limited options among IPM-focused institutions
Because each question carries 4 marks, a score of 200 requires correct answers to only 50 out of 90 questions — accuracy matters more than attempting every question.

How to prepare
Building the QA foundation
IPMAT Quantitative Ability tests Class 10–12 level mathematics. The Short Answer section demands genuine problem-solving ability since there are no options to choose from. Prioritise:
- Arithmetic and number theory — the highest-frequency topics across both QA sections. Master percentages, ratios, time-speed-distance, and number properties before moving to advanced topics.
- Algebra — quadratic equations, inequalities, and sequences appear regularly in both SA and MCQ sections.
- Geometry and mensuration — often tested in the MCQ section with diagram-based questions. Know circle theorems and triangle properties thoroughly.
- Permutations, combinations, and probability — consistently present, usually 2–4 questions.
- Data interpretation — mostly in the MCQ section; practice reading graphs and tables quickly.
Work through past IPMAT papers from 2015 onwards. IIM Indore releases previous year question papers on its official website.
Building VA performance
The Verbal Ability section is the largest (45 questions, 180 marks), making it decisive. Reading Comprehension passages typically account for 20–25 of these questions. To perform well:
- Read actively and widely — editorials, essays, and long-form journalism improve both speed and comprehension. Aim for 1–2 lengthy articles per day throughout preparation.
- Para jumble practice — learn to identify the opening and closing sentence of a passage; look for logical connectors and pronoun-antecedent chains.
- Grammar rules — focus on agreement, parallelism, tense consistency, and modifier placement. These are frequently tested in sentence correction questions.
- Vocabulary in context — most vocabulary questions in IPMAT test meaning-in-context rather than rote definitions. Develop the habit of inferring word meanings from surrounding text.
Time management strategy
Each section has a strict 40-minute limit. Within QA-SA, attempting all 15 questions is possible if you work efficiently; leave tricky problems for last. In QA-MCQ, eliminate obviously wrong options to narrow down choices. In VA, complete RC passages first (they carry the most marks) before moving to grammar and vocabulary questions.
Mock tests and practice
Consistent timed mock tests are essential. Take at least 8–10 full-length IPMAT mocks before the exam, followed by thorough analysis of errors. Focus particularly on accuracy in QA-SA (no negative marking penalty, but also no benefit from guessing).
