What IISER Pune is
The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune is a dedicated research and teaching institute established in 2006 by the Ministry of Education (then MHRD). In 2012, it was declared an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, placing it in the same legislative category as the IITs and IISc (IISER Pune Official Website).
IISER Pune is ranked 55th overall in the NIRF 2025 rankings (NIRF 2025). The institute is dedicated exclusively to basic science research and education — it is not an engineering college and does not offer B.Tech. or engineering programs.
Research is carried out across eight departments: Biology, Chemistry, Data Science, Earth and Climate Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Science Education. The 98-acre campus houses approximately 1,435 students (937 undergraduates, 498 doctoral students) and 136 faculty members (IISER Pune Placement Brochure 2024-25).
Who it’s for
IISER Pune is for students who are genuinely interested in basic science and research. The typical IISER student wants to pursue a career in scientific research, academia, or science-adjacent fields (data science, science communication, policy).
This is not a fallback for students who didn’t get into an IIT. The BS-MS program is a 5-year commitment to studying science across multiple disciplines, with a mandatory research thesis in the fifth year. Students who want to become engineers, or who are primarily motivated by placement packages, should look elsewhere.
The defining feature of IISER Pune is the integration of teaching and research from the undergraduate level — students take laboratory courses, work on research projects with faculty, and complete a year-long Master’s thesis, all within the BS-MS program. This research exposure at the undergraduate level is unusual in India and prepares students well for PhD programs abroad.
Admission is primarily through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), administered through the State and Central Boards Channel. From 2024 onwards, JEE Advanced is the only other channel — the KVPY channel has been discontinued (IISER Pune Placement Brochure 2024-25).
Programs offered
BS-MS Dual Degree (5 years):
- The flagship program combining bachelor’s and master’s education in basic sciences
- First 4 semesters: compulsory courses across Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Earth & Climate Science, Humanities, and foundation courses (Introduction to Computing, Academic Communication Skills, Thermodynamics, Data Analysis)
- Semesters 5-8: students choose a Major and Minor in disciplines of their choice (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Mathematics, Physics)
- Semesters 9-10: year-long research project leading to a Master’s thesis (36 credits)
- Data Science and Science Education are available as thesis areas but not currently offered as Majors
M.Sc. Programs (2 years):
- M.Sc. Chemistry — launched in 2022-23, 84 minimum credits
- M.Sc. Geology (Earth & Climate Sciences) — 98 minimum credits
- M.Sc. Mathematics — 86 minimum credits
- Admission through institutional advertisement and entrance process
Integrated Ph.D. (6 years):
- Available in Biology and Physics
- Students enter as M.Sc. students and transition to Junior Research Fellow (JRF) status at the end of Year 2
- 84 credits of coursework in the first two years
Ph.D. Programs (5 years):
- Available in Biology, Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences, Earth and Climate Science, Mathematics, and Physics
- Requires a master’s degree in Science/Engineering/Math or bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Medicine with 60%+ aggregate
- 16 credits of coursework in the first year, followed by research
- PhD programmes across multiple disciplines
Campus and infrastructure
The IISER Pune campus is located on a 98-acre site in Pashan, Pune (pincode 411008). Campus construction was completed in 2012.
Facilities include:
- Well-equipped research laboratories across all departments
- Central instrumentation facility
- Computational facilities for data science and modelling
- Lecture halls and seminar rooms
- Library with physical and digital resources
- Residential hostels for all students
- Sports facilities
- Health centre
The campus supports a research-intensive environment — seminar series, workshops, and conferences are regular features of academic life.
Things to verify before applying
- IAT 2026 dates and registration: The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is conducted annually for BS-MS admissions. Check iiseradmission.in for the current cycle’s registration dates and eligibility.
- Admission channels: From 2024, only IAT and JEE Advanced are valid for BS-MS admission. The KVPY channel has been discontinued. Verify the current channels at the admission portal.
- Fee structure: IISER Pune is a central government institution — fees are significantly lower than private universities. Confirm current semester fees at the admissions portal.
- Career outcomes: Most BS-MS graduates pursue Ph.D. programs (in India or abroad) rather than direct industry employment. The placement cell exists but industry placements are secondary to higher education outcomes. Verify recent placement data with the placement cell.
- Research focus: This is a research-first institution. If you are not interested in scientific research or academia, IISER may not be the right fit despite its excellent ranking and low fees.
- NIRF ranking: IISER Pune is ranked 55th overall in NIRF 2025.
