What McMaster University Is
McMaster University is a public research university in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1887, it has grown into one of Canada’s most research-intensive universities and is a member of the U15 Group, the association of Canada’s 15 leading research universities.
McMaster is ranked 152nd globally by QS in 2025 and is particularly recognised in health sciences and engineering. The university’s medical school pioneered problem-based learning (PBL) in the 1960s, an approach that has since been adopted by medical schools worldwide. McMaster’s medical programme is consistently ranked among the top in Canada.
The university comprises six faculties: Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, Social Sciences, and the DeGroote School of Business. Its campus sits on 121 hectares in west Hamilton, about 70 km southwest of Toronto.
For Indian students, McMaster is primarily relevant for its engineering programmes (both undergraduate and graduate), the DeGroote MBA and Master of Finance, and its growing computer science and data science programmes. Hamilton’s proximity to Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) job market is a practical advantage.
Who It’s For
Undergraduate applicants from India need strong Grade 12 results. Engineering programmes typically require high 80s to low 90s (percentage) in prerequisite subjects, with Mathematics and sciences being mandatory. The Bachelor of Health Sciences programme is one of the most competitive undergraduate programmes in Canada, with acceptance rates well below 10%.
Postgraduate applicants typically need a four-year bachelor’s degree with a B+ average or equivalent (approximately 75%+ from a Tier 1 Indian institution, higher from others). IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) is the standard requirement, though some programmes require higher scores. The DeGroote MBA accepts GMAT or GRE scores.
Students who value co-op and experiential learning will find that McMaster offers co-op options across many engineering and science programmes. The 12-16 month co-op placements provide Canadian work experience and income that can partially offset tuition costs.
McMaster is a strong option for students who want to be in Ontario (Canada’s largest job market) at a lower cost than the University of Toronto or the University of Waterloo, while still attending a well-regarded research university.
Programs Popular with Indian Students
-
MEng / MASc Engineering — Various specialisations including Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Chemical, and Civil Engineering. The MEng is a coursework-based master’s (typically 1-2 years), while the MASc is research-based. International fees: approximately CAD 20,000-25,000/yr.
-
MBA (DeGroote School of Business) — 16-28 months depending on format. AACSB-accredited. Options include full-time, accelerated, and co-op MBA. GMAT or GRE accepted. International fees: approximately CAD 80,000 total for the full programme.
-
Master of Finance — 16 months, offered by DeGroote. Covers corporate finance, investments, and financial engineering. Strong placement into GTA financial services.
-
BSc Computer Science (Honours) — 4 years. Covers algorithms, software development, AI, and systems. Co-op option available. See also: BSc Computer Science.
-
BEng Software Engineering — 4 years with optional co-op. One of the few dedicated software engineering undergraduate degrees in Ontario, as distinct from computer science.
-
Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) — 4 years. Extremely competitive; strong pathway to medical school. Popular with pre-med Indian students in Canada.
-
Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) — 4 years through DeGroote. Finance, accounting, and marketing specialisations available. See also: BBA.
Campus and Location
McMaster’s main campus is in the Westdale neighbourhood of Hamilton, a mid-sized city (population ~575,000) at the western tip of Lake Ontario. The campus is compact and walkable, with most faculties within a 10-minute walk of each other.
Hamilton is approximately 70 km from downtown Toronto (about 1 hour by car, or 1.5 hours by GO Transit bus). The city has been growing as Toronto’s housing costs have pushed people westward, and Hamilton’s own tech and healthcare sectors are expanding.
Cost of living: Hamilton is meaningfully cheaper than Toronto for housing. Student accommodation ranges from CAD 600-1,000/month for shared housing off-campus, compared to CAD 1,000-1,500+ in Toronto. McMaster’s on-campus residences are guaranteed for first-year students.
Indian community: The Greater Hamilton Area has a growing South Asian community with Indian grocery stores, temples, and gurdwaras. The Indian Students Association at McMaster is active.
Post-graduation work permit (PGWP): McMaster programmes qualify for Canada’s PGWP, which allows graduates to work in Canada for up to three years after completing a programme of two or more years (one year for shorter programmes). This is a major draw for Indian students planning to gain Canadian work experience or pursue permanent residency through Express Entry.
Costs and Financial Aid
International undergraduate tuition at McMaster for 2024-25 ranges from approximately CAD 42,000-55,000/yr depending on the programme. Engineering programmes are at the higher end.
Scholarships for Indian students: McMaster offers entrance scholarships for undergraduate students (typically CAD 2,500-4,000 based on admission average), and some programmes have additional awards. Postgraduate students may be eligible for Graduate Scholarship Bursaries, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships that can significantly offset costs.
Total cost estimate for a 2-year master’s (MEng): Tuition (CAD 20,000-25,000/yr x 2) + living costs (CAD 15,000-18,000/yr x 2) = approximately CAD 70,000-86,000 total, or roughly ₹43-53 lakh at current exchange rates.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- PGWP eligibility: Confirm your programme qualifies for Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit. Full-time programmes at designated learning institutions (DLIs) like McMaster generally qualify, but verify current immigration rules on the IRCC website.
- Co-op vs non-co-op: Some programmes offer optional co-op. Applying for the co-op stream may have different requirements and deadlines. Co-op can add 12-16 months to programme duration but provides paid Canadian work experience.
- DeGroote MBA GMAT/GRE requirements: Verify minimum scores and whether waivers are available based on work experience.
- English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) is standard, but some programmes require higher. Verify for your specific programme.
- Ontario health insurance (OHIP): International students in Ontario are NOT covered by provincial health insurance. Budget for the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), approximately CAD 720/yr.
- Study permit processing times: Apply early. Processing times from India can take several months.
