What Nanyang Technological University Is
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a comprehensive public research university in Singapore, ranked 15th globally by QS in 2025. While the current university was formally established in 1991 through the merger of Nanyang Technological Institute (founded 1981) and the National Institute of Education, its roots trace to Nanyang University, founded in 1955 by the Chinese-speaking community in Southeast Asia. Today NTU has approximately 33,000 students across eight colleges and schools.
NTU is globally recognised for:
- Engineering: NTU’s College of Engineering is one of the largest and most research-active in the world. It covers electrical and electronic, mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. NTU consistently ranks among the top 15 globally for engineering.
- Computer Science and Engineering: The School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) has grown rapidly in strength and reputation, with active research in AI, cybersecurity, data science, and Internet of Things.
- Business: Nanyang Business School (NBS) is AACSB and EQUIS accredited. Its MBA is ranked among the top in Asia by the Financial Times.
- Materials Science: NTU is ranked among the top globally for materials science research, with significant output from the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
- Communication: The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) is Asia’s top-ranked communication school.
NTU’s campus — a 200-hectare site in Jurong West — has been recognised as one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world. Unlike NUS’s multi-campus model, NTU operates from a single large campus, creating a more self-contained university experience.
Like NUS, NTU offers the MOE Tuition Grant, where the Singapore Ministry of Education subsidises international students’ tuition in exchange for a three-year bond to work in Singapore after graduation.
Who It’s For
NTU is a strong fit for Indian students who want:
- Top-ranked engineering education: NTU’s engineering programs are its historical strength and remain among the best in Asia. If your primary interest is engineering (electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, or computer engineering), NTU is comparable to NUS and in some sub-disciplines stronger.
- Computer science with an engineering orientation: NTU’s SCSE combines CS with engineering, which suits students interested in systems, hardware-software integration, robotics, and IoT alongside traditional software engineering.
- A Singapore career pathway at slightly lower cost than NUS: NTU’s international fees are generally SGD 2,000–5,000/yr lower than NUS for equivalent programs. The Tuition Grant scheme and three-year bond work identically.
- Business at one of Asia’s top schools: Nanyang Business School’s BBA and MBA programs are well-regarded, with strong placement in Singapore’s financial and consulting sectors.
NTU is slightly less selective than NUS for most programs, making it a realistic target for a broader range of strong Indian applicants. However, competition remains intense — NTU is a top-15 global university.

Campus and Location
NTU’s single 200-hectare campus is located in Jurong West, in the western part of Singapore. The campus is approximately 30 minutes from the city centre by MRT (Pioneer or Jurong East stations connect to the campus via NTU’s internal shuttle bus network). The campus is architecturally distinctive: the Hive (learning hub), the Arc (student activity centre), and the School of Art, Design and Media building are frequently cited among Asia’s most striking university buildings.
On-campus housing is available and most international undergraduate students are guaranteed housing for at least the first year. NTU’s hall culture is strong — residential halls organise sports, arts, and social activities. On-campus room rates are approximately SGD 2,500–4,500/semester depending on room type.
The Jurong West location means NTU is further from Singapore’s central business district than NUS (Kent Ridge). However, Singapore is compact and well-connected by MRT — commuting to internships or part-time work in the city centre is straightforward. The Jurong Lake District, Singapore’s planned second CBD, is adjacent to NTU and will create new commercial and employment opportunities near campus.
Indian students will find the same community infrastructure as described for NUS: Little India, Indian grocery stores, temples, and a significant Indian population (approximately 9% of Singapore’s residents). NTU has Indian student organisations and cultural groups on campus.
Costs and Financial Aid
- Undergraduate tuition (without Tuition Grant): SGD 33,000–45,000/yr depending on program (2024–25). Engineering programs are approximately SGD 42,000–45,000/yr; Arts and Social Sciences approximately SGD 33,000/yr. Approximately ₹20–28 lakh/yr at indicative SGD–INR rate.
- Undergraduate tuition (with MOE Tuition Grant): Approximately SGD 16,000–19,500/yr. The Tuition Grant requires signing a three-year bond to work in a Singapore-registered company after graduation.
- Graduate tuition: MSc programs range from SGD 30,000–50,000 total depending on program and duration. MBA is approximately SGD 62,000 total for the 12-month program. Research-based programs (PhD) are typically funded with stipends.
- Living costs: Budget SGD 8,000–12,000/yr if living on campus (including meals); substantially more if off-campus.
- Scholarships: NTU offers the Nanyang Scholarship (full tuition, living allowance, travel grant, computer allowance) for strong international undergraduates. The ASEAN Scholarship covers full tuition for ASEAN nationals (not available to Indian students). The CN Yang Scholars Programme provides enrichment and mentorship for top science and engineering students. Graduate research scholarships cover tuition and provide monthly stipends.
Important note on the Tuition Grant bond: Identical to NUS — the three-year work obligation requires employment at a Singapore-registered company. Multinational firms with Singapore offices satisfy the bond. Breaking the bond requires full repayment with interest. For Indian students planning to build careers in Asia’s technology and business hubs, the bond is generally advantageous.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- Admission competitiveness: NTU is selective for international applicants. For engineering and computing, expect to need 90%+ in CBSE/ISC Class XII (higher for the most competitive programs). SAT/ACT scores are recommended but not mandatory for Indian board students.
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0 overall for most programs, or TOEFL 90. Some programs require higher scores. NTU’s English proficiency requirement is slightly lower than NUS’s for some programs.
- Tuition Grant terms: The three-year bond terms are identical across Singapore’s autonomous universities (NTU, NUS, SMU, SUTD). Read the terms carefully before signing.
- Campus location: NTU is in Jurong West — further from the central business district than NUS. If proximity to the city centre matters to you (for internships, social life, or part-time work), factor in the 30-minute MRT commute.
- Application deadline: International undergraduate applications typically close in late January or early February for August intake. Check the NTU admissions website for exact dates.
- Housing application: Apply early for on-campus housing. First-year international students are typically prioritised, but space is limited.
