What the National University of Singapore Is

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a comprehensive public research university, ranked 8th globally by QS in 2025 — the highest-ranked university in Asia. Founded in 1905, NUS has approximately 43,000 students across 17 faculties and schools, covering computing, engineering, business, law, medicine, arts and social sciences, science, design, and public policy.

NUS is globally recognised for:

  • Computing: The NUS School of Computing is ranked among the top 10 globally for computer science. It is one of Asia’s largest computing schools, with strong research output in AI, cybersecurity, database systems, and software engineering.
  • Engineering: The Faculty of Engineering covers electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil, biomedical, environmental, and industrial systems engineering. Well-funded research labs with industry partnerships across Singapore’s high-tech economy.
  • Business: NUS Business School is AACSB and EQUIS accredited, offering the BBA (Hons) with multiple specialisations. The MBA program is ranked among the top in Asia.
  • Law: NUS Law is Asia’s top-ranked law faculty, with particular strength in Asian and comparative law, intellectual property, and international trade law.

NUS operates a residential college system for undergraduates, modelled loosely on the Oxbridge system, with several themed residential colleges (Tembusu College, College of Alice & Peter Tan, Ridge View Residential College, Residential College 4, Cinnamon College) that combine living and learning.

For Indian students, NUS represents a top-tier global education at a lower cost than comparable US or UK institutions, with a clear pathway to employment in Singapore’s technology and finance sectors. The MOE Tuition Grant is a key financial mechanism: the Singapore Ministry of Education subsidises international students’ tuition in exchange for a three-year bond to work in Singapore after graduation.

Who It’s For

NUS is a realistic target for high-achieving Indian students who want:

  • A top-ranked computing or engineering education in Asia: NUS Computing is comparable to top US CS programs in research output and industry connections, at a fraction of the cost. Engineering programs are similarly strong.
  • An affordable alternative to the US/UK for top-tier education: With the MOE Tuition Grant, international tuition drops to approximately SGD 17,000–20,000/yr — roughly ₹10–12 lakh — which is comparable to or less than top Indian private universities. Without the grant, fees are SGD 38,000–50,000/yr.
  • A pathway to work in Singapore: The three-year bond attached to the Tuition Grant effectively guarantees that you will live and work in Singapore after graduation. Singapore’s tech sector (Google, Meta, Grab, Shopee, DBS, government agencies) actively recruits NUS graduates.
  • A business education at one of Asia’s top: For BBA or MBA aspirants, NUS Business School combines AACSB/EQUIS accreditation with proximity to Asia-Pacific markets.

NUS is highly competitive — admission rates for computing and engineering are low, and Indian applicants compete against strong candidates from across Asia. If you are considering NUS specifically for business programs, also see our dedicated NUS Business School profile.

  • BComp Computer Science: NUS’s flagship computing degree. Specialisations include AI, computer security, database systems, multimedia, networking, programming languages, and software engineering. The program includes a mandatory industrial attachment (internship). Ranked among the top 10 CS programs globally. See also: BSc Computer Science.

  • BComp Information Systems: Combines computing with business. Suited for students interested in fintech, business analytics, or IT consulting rather than pure computer science.

  • BEng Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Chemical Engineering: Well-established engineering programs with strong industry partnerships. Co-op and internship opportunities with Singapore’s manufacturing and technology sectors.

  • BSc (Hons) Data Science and Analytics: Offered through the Faculty of Science. Combines statistics, computer science, and domain knowledge. Growing demand from Indian students given data science’s career prospects. See also: BSc Data Science.

  • BBA (NUS Business School): Nine majors including finance, accountancy, and analytics. Mandatory internship. For a detailed profile, see NUS Business School.

  • BA Economics (Hons): Strong quantitative focus. Can be combined with a second major in statistics, mathematics, or computing.

  • LLB (Law): NUS Law is the top law school in Asia. Four-year program. Admission is extremely competitive. See also: LLB.

  • MSc Computer Science: Course-based master’s. Strong placement into Singapore’s tech industry. See also: MSc Data Science.

  • MSc Business Analytics: One-year intensive master’s combining data science with business applications. Popular with Indian students seeking analytics roles in Singapore.

  • MBA (NUS Business School): 17-month full-time MBA. Ranked among the top 15 in Asia by the Financial Times. Strong focus on Asia-Pacific business.

Campus and Location

NUS’s main campus (Kent Ridge) occupies approximately 150 hectares in southwestern Singapore, connected to the city by the Kent Ridge and Haw Par Villa MRT stations and a comprehensive internal shuttle bus network. The campus is self-contained: libraries, food courts, sports facilities, medical centre, and residential halls are all on-site. The University Town (UTown) complex serves as the social and residential hub, with common spaces, study areas, and dining options open until late.

Singapore is a city-state with a population of approximately 5.9 million. It is one of the world’s most expensive cities for housing and food, but NUS on-campus housing (approximately SGD 3,000–5,000/semester) is significantly cheaper than the private market. Most undergraduate students are guaranteed on-campus housing for at least the first year.

Indian students will find a substantial Indian community in Singapore (approximately 9% of the population). Little India is a major cultural district with Indian restaurants, grocery stores, temples, and shops. Tamil is one of Singapore’s four official languages. NUS itself has a significant Indian student population, and multiple Indian cultural societies operate on campus.

Singapore’s tropical climate (28–32°C year-round, high humidity) is familiar to many Indian students and does not require cold-weather adaptation.

Costs and Financial Aid

  • Undergraduate tuition (without Tuition Grant): SGD 38,000–50,000/yr depending on faculty (2024–25). Computing and Engineering are at the higher end; Arts and Social Sciences are lower. Approximately ₹23–31 lakh/yr at indicative SGD–INR rate.
  • Undergraduate tuition (with MOE Tuition Grant): Approximately SGD 17,000–20,500/yr. The Tuition Grant is a subsidy from the Singapore Ministry of Education available to all international students who sign a three-year bond to work in a Singapore-registered company after graduation. This is not a scholarship — it is a contractual obligation.
  • Graduate tuition: Varies widely. MSc Computer Science is approximately SGD 45,000–53,000 total (course-based). MBA is approximately SGD 65,000 total. Research-based programs (MSc by Research, PhD) are typically funded.
  • Living costs: Budget SGD 10,000–15,000/yr if living on campus; substantially more if renting off-campus in the private market.
  • Scholarships: NUS offers Science & Technology Undergraduate Scholarships, ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarships, and other merit-based awards for international students. These are competitive and may cover full tuition plus living allowance. Check the NUS Office of Admissions for current offerings.

Important note on the Tuition Grant bond: The three-year work obligation means you must work for a Singapore-registered company for three years after graduation. This is not limited to Singaporean companies — multinational companies with Singapore offices (Google Singapore, JPMorgan Singapore, etc.) satisfy the bond. Breaking the bond requires repaying the grant amount plus interest. For many Indian students, this is a feature rather than a drawback, as it provides a structured pathway to international work experience.

Things to Verify Before Applying

  • Admission competitiveness: NUS is highly selective for international applicants. For Computing, expect to need strong Class XII results (95%+ in relevant subjects from CBSE/ISC) or equivalent. SAT/ACT scores, while not mandatory, strengthen applications. Some programs require interviews or written tests.
  • English proficiency: NUS requires IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 92 for most programs. Some programs require higher scores.
  • Tuition Grant terms: Read the Tuition Grant bond terms carefully before signing. The three-year obligation begins from your graduation date. Understand the penalties for non-compliance.
  • On-campus housing: Apply early. While first-year students are typically guaranteed housing, subsequent years require re-application and are not guaranteed. Off-campus housing in Singapore is expensive (SGD 800–1,500/month for a room).
  • Application deadline: International undergraduate applications typically close in late February for August intake. Graduate deadlines vary by program.
  • Credential evaluation: NUS accepts CBSE, ISC, and IB results. State board results may require additional evaluation. AP/SAT scores can supplement the application.
