What TU Delft Is
TU Delft (Technische Universiteit Delft) is a public research university in Delft, Netherlands, founded in 1842. It is the oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands. In the QS World University Rankings 2025, it is ranked 47th globally, making it one of the highest-ranked technical universities in Europe.
TU Delft is a member of the 4TU.Federation (alongside Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente, and Wageningen University) and CESAER, the association of leading European engineering universities. The university is particularly renowned for aerospace engineering (consistently ranked in the global top 5 for this field), civil engineering, architecture, and computer science.
Unlike many European technical universities, TU Delft teaches all of its master’s programmes in English, making it highly accessible to international students. Bachelor’s programmes are taught in Dutch, except for specific English-track BSc programmes. The university has a large international student body, with students from over 100 countries.
For Indian students, TU Delft is primarily relevant as a destination for master’s-level study in engineering, computer science, and architecture, where tuition fees (~€17,000–€20,000/year for non-EU students) are substantially lower than in the UK, US, or Australia for a comparable quality of education.
Who It’s For
TU Delft is a strong option for students who:
- Want a top-50 engineering or CS education in Europe at a fraction of US or UK tuition costs. Non-EU tuition at TU Delft (~€17,000–€20,000/year) compares favourably to £40,000+ at top UK universities or USD 50,000+ at US universities.
- Are targeting master’s-level study (all MSc programmes are in English). TU Delft’s two-year master’s programmes are well-regarded internationally and provide strong preparation for both industry and doctoral research.
- Are interested in aerospace, civil engineering, architecture, or water management — fields where TU Delft has a global reputation that significantly exceeds its overall QS ranking.
- Want access to the Dutch and broader European job market after graduation. The Netherlands offers a one-year “orientation year” (zoekjaar) post-study work permit for graduates, and the Dutch tech and engineering sectors actively recruit TU Delft graduates.
TU Delft is not ideal for students seeking an English-medium undergraduate degree (most BSc programmes are in Dutch) or for students focused primarily on business or management studies.
Programs Popular with Indian Students
-
MSc Computer Science: Two years, taught in English. Tracks include Data Science & Technology, Software Technology, Algorithmics, and Cyber Security. Strong connections to Delft’s tech ecosystem and nearby companies in The Hague and Rotterdam. See also: BSc Computer Science.
-
MSc Electrical Engineering: Two years, taught in English. Covers telecommunications, microelectronics, signal processing, and embedded systems. TU Delft has strong research links with NXP Semiconductors, ASML, and Philips.
-
MSc Aerospace Engineering: Two years, taught in English. TU Delft’s aerospace faculty is one of the largest in Europe and consistently ranked in the global top 5 for this discipline. Specialisations include aerodynamics, space engineering, and control & operations.
-
MSc Civil Engineering: Two years, taught in English. Strong focus on water management, structural engineering, and geotechnics — areas where the Netherlands has centuries of expertise due to its geography below sea level.
-
MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences: Two years, taught in English. TU Delft’s architecture faculty is among the most respected in Europe, known for its technical and design-driven approach.
-
MSc Applied Mathematics: Two years, taught in English. Covers applied analysis, numerical analysis, probability, and optimization. See also: MSc Mathematics.
Campus and Location
Delft is a small city (population ~100,000) in the province of South Holland, situated between The Hague and Rotterdam. Despite its modest size, Delft is well-connected: Rotterdam (15 minutes by train), The Hague (15 minutes), Amsterdam (1 hour), and Schiphol Airport (45 minutes) are all easily accessible by the Netherlands’ extensive rail network.
The TU Delft campus is located on the south side of the city and is one of the largest university campuses in the Netherlands. The campus features purpose-built facilities including the TU Delft Library (an architectural landmark), the Aerospace Engineering faculty building, and the recently opened ECHO building for engineering education.
Living costs in Delft are moderate by Dutch standards but housing is tight. A room in student housing typically costs €450–700/month. Total living costs (rent, food, insurance, transport) run approximately €1,000–1,300/month. Finding housing can be challenging, and students are strongly advised to arrange accommodation before arriving. TU Delft provides support for international students through its housing office.
The Netherlands is compact and well-connected. Students can easily travel across the country for internships, cultural events, or weekend trips. Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Eindhoven are all within 1–1.5 hours by train.
Costs and Financial Aid
TU Delft has a two-tier fee structure:
- EU/EEA students: €2,530/year (statutory tuition fee, set by the Dutch government)
- Non-EU/EEA students: approximately €17,000–€20,000/year depending on the programme
For Indian students (non-EU), the annual tuition of €17,000–€20,000 is significantly lower than comparable engineering programmes in the UK (£35,000–£40,000), US (~USD 50,000+), or Australia (~AUD 45,000–50,000).
Total cost of attendance for one year at TU Delft (non-EU):
- Tuition: ~€17,000–€20,000
- Living costs: ~€12,000–15,600
- Total: approximately €29,000–35,600/year (roughly ₹26,00,000–32,00,000/year)
Scholarships for international students:
- Justus & Louise van Effen Excellence Scholarships: Full tuition waiver plus monthly living allowance for strong non-EU master’s students. Very competitive — approximately 25 awards per year.
- Holland Scholarship: €5,000 one-time grant for non-EU students studying in the Netherlands for the first time.
- TU Delft Excellence Scholarship: Tuition waiver (pays non-EU fee, student pays EU-rate) for top-performing non-EU master’s applicants.
- Faculty-specific scholarships: Various awards within individual faculties.
Health insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands. International students from outside the EU typically need private insurance, costing approximately €50–80/month.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- Bachelor’s programmes are mostly in Dutch: Indian students should primarily target master’s programmes, which are all taught in English. A few BSc programmes offer English tracks, but these are limited.
- Application is through Studielink and TU Delft portal: Dutch university applications go through Studielink (the national portal), combined with a TU Delft-specific application. Deadlines for non-EU master’s applicants are typically 1 April for September start (earlier deadlines for scholarship consideration, often 1 December or 1 January).
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.5+ (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL 90+ for most programmes.
- No standardised entrance exams: TU Delft does not require GRE, GMAT, SAT, or ACT. Admission is based on academic record, relevant bachelor’s degree, motivation letter, and CV.
- Orientation year (zoekjaar) visa: Graduates of Dutch universities are eligible for a one-year post-study job-seeker visa. Combined with the Netherlands’ 30% tax ruling (a tax benefit for international knowledge workers), this creates a favourable employment pathway for graduates.
- Housing must be arranged early: Delft has a significant housing shortage. Apply for student housing as soon as you receive your admission offer. TU Delft’s housing office helps international students, but places are limited.
- Proof of financial means: Non-EU students need to demonstrate sufficient funds (approximately €12,000–13,000/year for living costs) for the residence permit application.
