What the University of Amsterdam Is
The University of Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam, or UvA) is a public research university in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Founded in 1632 as the Athenaeum Illustre, it is one of the largest universities in Europe by enrollment, with approximately 40,000 students across seven faculties. UvA is ranked 53rd globally by the QS World University Rankings 2025.
UvA is notable for offering a substantial number of English-taught programmes at both bachelor’s and master’s level, which is uncommon in continental Europe. This makes it accessible to international students who do not speak Dutch. The university operates across multiple locations in central Amsterdam, with most faculties based at or near the Roeterseiland campus and the Science Park Amsterdam.
The university is particularly strong in Psychology (ranked in the top 20 globally by QS subject rankings), Economics, and Life Sciences. The Amsterdam Business School holds both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation.
For Indian students, UvA is notable for three reasons: its relatively low tuition fees compared to UK, US, or Australian universities (particularly for programmes at the bachelor’s level); the availability of English-taught programmes; and Amsterdam’s status as a major European technology and business hub with strong post-graduation employment opportunities.
Who It’s For
UvA is relevant for Indian students in several situations:
Undergraduate applicants interested in studying in English in continental Europe at a significantly lower cost than the UK or US. Non-EU tuition fees at UvA range from approximately EUR 12,000 to EUR 20,000 per year, which is roughly half the cost of comparable UK universities. EU/EEA students pay the statutory fee of approximately EUR 2,530 per year.
Students interested in Psychology will find one of the strongest departments in Europe. UvA’s Psychology programme is fully taught in English at both bachelor’s and master’s level.
Postgraduate applicants in Economics, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence looking for strong research-focused European programmes. The Informatics Institute at UvA is a leading European centre for AI and machine learning research.
Students who want to work in Europe after graduation. The Netherlands offers a one-year “orientation year” visa (zoekjaar) for non-EU graduates of Dutch universities, allowing them to search for employment in the Netherlands after graduation.
UvA is less suited to students who want a campus-based university experience. UvA’s buildings are spread across Amsterdam. There is no single enclosed campus. Students live in the city, not in university accommodation (housing is arranged independently and Amsterdam’s housing market is competitive and expensive).

Campus and Location
UvA does not have a single campus. Its faculties and buildings are distributed across central Amsterdam:
Roeterseiland: The main hub for the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (including Psychology), the Faculty of Economics and Business, and the Faculty of Law. Located in central Amsterdam near the Amstel river.
Science Park Amsterdam: Home to the Faculty of Science, including Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, and Physics. A modern research campus on the eastern edge of Amsterdam, connected to the city centre by train.
Binnenstad (City Centre): The historic university buildings, including the Agnietenkapel and the University Library, are in the city centre.
Housing: UvA does not provide comprehensive university accommodation. International students are expected to arrange their own housing. Amsterdam has a well-documented housing shortage, and finding accommodation can be difficult and expensive. Expect to pay EUR 600-1,000 per month for a room in shared accommodation. UvA offers limited housing through its partner housing provider for first-year international students, but this is not guaranteed and must be applied for early.
Living costs: UvA estimates total living costs (excluding tuition) of approximately EUR 12,000-15,000 per year. Amsterdam is an expensive European city, though costs are manageable compared to London.
Costs and Financial Aid
Non-EU international tuition fees at UvA range from approximately EUR 12,000 to EUR 20,000 per year depending on the programme (2024-25 rates). This is significantly lower than equivalent UK or US programmes.
EU/EEA students pay the Dutch statutory tuition fee of approximately EUR 2,530 per year.
Scholarships available to Indian students include:
- Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES): Full tuition plus EUR 1,000/month living costs for strongly talented non-EU students. Approximately 15 scholarships awarded annually across all faculties. Highly competitive.
- Amsterdam Merit Scholarship: EUR 6,000 per year for non-EU bachelor’s students with strong academic records.
- Holland Scholarship: EUR 5,000 one-time scholarship for non-EU students from outside the EEA. Funded by Dutch universities and the Ministry of Education.
Post-study work: Non-EU graduates of Dutch universities can apply for the “zoekjaar” (orientation year) residence permit, allowing one year of job searching in the Netherlands. This can lead to a work permit if employment is found.
Things to Verify Before Applying
- Numerus fixus (programme capacity limits): Some popular programmes (Psychology, PPLE) have a numerus fixus, meaning there is a fixed number of places and a selection procedure. Apply by the January deadline for these programmes.
- Application deadlines: Non-EU applicants typically face earlier deadlines than EU applicants. For most programmes, the deadline is 1 April for September intake. Numerus fixus programmes close 15 January.
- Indian qualification equivalence: UvA assesses Indian qualifications through NUFFIC (the Dutch organisation for international education). CBSE/ISC with strong marks is generally accepted, but requirements vary by programme. Some programmes may require additional qualifications.
- Housing urgency: Start your housing search immediately upon receiving an offer. Amsterdam housing is extremely competitive, and waiting until arrival is risky.
- Health insurance: Non-EU students in the Netherlands are required to have health insurance. If you work alongside your studies, you need Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering). Otherwise, international student insurance is acceptable.
- Dutch language: While bachelor’s programmes listed here are English-taught, living in Amsterdam without any Dutch is manageable but learning basic Dutch will help with daily life and future employment.
