What the University of British Columbia Is
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university founded in 1908, with its main campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, and a second campus in Kelowna (UBC Okanagan). UBC is ranked 40th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and is consistently among the top three universities in Canada.
UBC enrols over 70,000 students across both campuses, of which approximately 59,150 are at the Vancouver campus (UBC Facts). International students comprise about 27.7% of the Vancouver campus population. UBC is one of only two Canadian members of the Association of American Universities (AAU), alongside the University of Toronto.
The university’s annual research funding exceeds CAD 890 million across nearly 10,000 projects. Eight Nobel laureates are affiliated with UBC as alumni or faculty. The Vancouver campus is situated on a 400-hectare endowment land on Point Grey, bordering the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by forest — it is widely considered one of the most scenic university campuses in North America.
Who It’s For
UBC is relevant for Indian students in several categories:
Undergraduate applicants targeting Computer Science, Engineering (through the Faculty of Applied Science), or Sauder Commerce. UBC’s admission process for international students from the Indian curriculum evaluates Class 12 results (CBSE, ISC, or state boards), with competitive programs requiring 90%+ aggregate. English proficiency requires IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 per band) or TOEFL 90+.
Graduate applicants seeking research-intensive MSc/MASc programs or the Sauder MBA. UBC’s graduate programs in Computer Science and Engineering are particularly strong, benefiting from Vancouver’s growing technology sector.
Students interested in co-op: UBC offers structured co-op programs in Engineering, Computer Science, Commerce, and Science. Engineering co-op is mandatory for some specialisations and provides 12–20 months of paid work experience across the degree.
Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows graduates of four-year programs to obtain a three-year open work permit, making UBC attractive for Indian students planning long-term careers in Canada.
Programs Popular with Indian Students
-
Computer Science: Offered through the Faculty of Science. UBC CS is ranked among the top 30 globally. The co-op program places students in roles at companies across Vancouver, Seattle, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Admission is competitive — students admitted to Science can apply for the CS major after first year, similar to the University of Toronto model.
-
Engineering (Faculty of Applied Science): UBC Engineering offers programs in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Biomedical, Mining, and Geological Engineering. The faculty is CEAB-accredited. Co-op is integrated into most engineering programs. The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Mechanical Engineering programs are the most popular among Indian applicants.
-
Sauder Commerce: The Bachelor of Commerce at UBC’s Sauder School of Business is an AACSB-accredited four-year program with specialisations in finance, accounting, marketing, and operations. The co-op option provides 8–16 months of work experience. Sauder’s location in Vancouver gives students access to Asia-Pacific business networks.
-
Economics: Offered through the Vancouver School of Economics, ranked among the top 30 economics departments globally.
-
Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics programs are available through the Faculty of Science. UBC’s strengths in environmental science and forestry are distinctive, though less commonly targeted by Indian students.
Campus and Location
UBC’s Vancouver campus is located on Point Grey, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver by transit. The campus covers 400 hectares and includes beaches, forests, and a botanical garden alongside academic buildings. The campus functions as a self-contained community with residences, restaurants, shops, and a bus exchange.
Key facilities include the Sauder School of Business building (renovated 2019), the ICICS/CS Building for computer science, the Applied Science complex for engineering, and the Michael Smith Laboratories for life sciences. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre serves as the main library.
Vancouver is Canada’s third-largest metropolitan area and a major gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. It has a significant and growing Indian community, particularly in the surrounding municipalities of Surrey and Burnaby. The city’s technology sector has expanded rapidly, with offices of Amazon, Microsoft, SAP, and numerous startups providing employment opportunities for graduates.
UBC Okanagan in Kelowna is a smaller campus (~11,750 students) with its own engineering, sciences, and management programs. International tuition is the same, but the student experience and career network differ from the Vancouver campus.
Cost of living: Vancouver is one of Canada’s most expensive cities. Shared accommodation near campus costs CAD 900–1,400/month. UBC guarantees first-year students a residence place if they apply by the deadline.
Costs and Financial Aid
International undergraduate tuition at UBC for 2025–26 is approximately (source: UBC Student Services):
- Applied Science (Engineering): ~CAD 60,240/yr
- Computer Science (Science): ~CAD 57,100/yr
- Sauder Commerce: ~CAD 57,100/yr
- Arts: ~CAD 43,730/yr
- Science (general): ~CAD 57,100/yr
These figures exclude student fees (~CAD 1,100/yr), health and dental insurance (iMED, ~CAD 1,100/yr), and UPass transit pass.
Scholarships for international students: UBC offers the International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES), valued at CAD 10,000–40,000 renewable for up to four years, awarded to strong international students. The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award covers full tuition and living costs for the duration of the degree — approximately 50 awards are made annually. UBC also offers Strong International Student (OIS) awards of CAD 5,000–10,000.

Things to Verify Before Applying
-
CS and Engineering admission structure: Like UofT, UBC admits students to a broad faculty (Science or Applied Science) and competitive specialisations are confirmed after first year. Check whether your target specialisation has additional GPA requirements.
-
Co-op eligibility: Co-op positions require students to be eligible for a co-op work permit (separate from a study permit). Verify current Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rules for co-op work permit processing.
-
English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall (6.0 per band) or TOEFL iBT 90 (reading 22, listening 22, writing 21, speaking 21). Sauder Commerce requires higher English scores in some cases.
-
Campus-specific admission: Admission to UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan are separate processes with different competitiveness levels. Ensure you select the correct campus on your application.
-
PGWP eligibility: UBC four-year bachelor’s programs qualify for a three-year PGWP. Verify current IRCC rules, particularly for accelerated or shortened programs.
-
Residence deadline: First-year residence guarantee requires application by the specified spring deadline (typically March). Late applications are placed on a waitlist.
